On their trip to California, the Cubs faced two of the MLB's most competitive teams, the Dodgers in Los Angeles and the Padres at Petco Park, coming out stronger with a 3-3 record. The Cubs still have the lead in the NL Central division with a 12-9 record, but their hitting decreased against the Padres' good pitching in the season, giving them only 8 runs in 28 innings.

The Cubs rested on Thursday but traveled back to Wrigley Field, where they would face another hot team in the Western Division, the Diamondbacks, who on Thursday completed a 6-4 sweep of the Marlins. The Cubs' April schedule has been more demanding, as after their trip to California, they will host the D-backs, then face the Dodgers again, and later host the Phillies.

Adding to the D-backs' offensive party, who are establishing themselves as one of the most complete lineups, Josh Naylor had an excellent series in Miami, hitting home runs in Game 2 and Game 3. Pavin Smith hit his seventh double of the season, and Carroll went 1-for-5 but extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
