Defending champions Argentina take on Ecuador in the first quarter final of the Copa America. The title holders made serene progress through the group stages, winning all three games without conceding a goal. Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez has been the star of the show, scoring four goals including a last gasp winner against Peru on Gameday Two. Ecuador needed a backs-to-the-wall performance against Mexico on Gameday Three to secure the 0-0 draw which confirmed their place in the last eight. However, they will need to make some huge improvements if they are to pose a serious threat to an Argentinian team currently on an eight game winning run.
This match against Ecuador should turn out to the advantage of the 2022 World Champions, who should pass this hurdle to reach the last four of this competition. Coach Lionel Scaloni, who helped Argentina finish 3rd at the Copa America in 2019 and win the last edition in Brazil (0-1) in 2021, could enable his team to achieve another performance. Argentina have a wide-open field for a place in the final, as Argentina could meet Venezuela or Canada in the semi-finals if they get over the "Ecuador" hurdle.

Argentina - Ecuador: Form Analysis
Argentina are in imperious form, winning 22 of their last 23 games. That run includes their victory at the 2022 World Cup, as well as notable wins over the likes of Brazil and Chile. Despite their array of attacking talent, defence has been the key to Argentina's success. They have conceded just twice in their last 8 games and have kept three clean sheets so far at the tournament. Ecuador's form has been a mixed bag over the last 12 months. They have won three and lost three of their last seven games, a sequence that includes a 1-0 defeat to Argentina in a June friendly. Their record at the Copa America has also been a mixed bag. It is 32 years since they last made the semi finals, but they have reached the last eight in two of the last three tournaments.

Argentina rested a few key players for their final group game, so expect to see the likes of Rodrigo de Paul and Alexis Mac Allister return to the starting lineup. Lionel Messi is also due to return after missing the last two games with a minor hamstring issue. Having started the tournament on the bench, Lautaro Martinez's fantastic form has ensured he will be in the starting lineup, at the expense of Nicolas Gonzalez.

Goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez was the star of the show in the Mexico game, but will need to take his game to a whole new level if he is top help Ecuador reach their first Copa America semi final in over 30 years.
