Elise Mertens of Belgium will go for her 9th career WTA title on Sunday, facing up-and-coming American Ann Li in the final of the 2025 Singapore Open. Mertens booked her spot in the finals with a scintillating 6-3 6-4 win over No.4 seed Xinyu Wang of China. The Belgian drilled 9 aces, collected 31 points off her first serves and then converted four break points to outclass her Chinese opponent who was gunning for her first final appearance on the WTA Tour. Mertens moved one win away from winning her 9th career WTA crown and first since ruling the 2023 Jasmin Open. Ann Li pulled off an upset win over Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(2) 1-0 ret. to clinch her fourth career finals appearance on the WTA main tour. The American got the edge over Kalinskaya by winning 23 first serve points and breaking two times to take the first set. Kalinskaya eventually decided to retire from the match as pain in her right thigh continued to bother her.

However, she needs to be cautious of Ann Li’s capability to pull off a stunner because this promising American has the skills to do so. There are two reasons why I believe Mertens will win. She has created 36 break point chances, from which she converted 19, or a 53% conversion rate. She has also held 87 percent of her serves, having been broken only five times in four matches. Moreover, there’s an argument to be made that Li might have gotten a lucky break when she played an injured Kalinskaya, the No.1 seed in the tournament.
