Reigning Stuttgart Open queen Jelena Ostapenko opens another title quest on Thursday against compatriot Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the second round of the 2025 Madrid Open.
Ostapenko joins the fray in Madrid brimming with confidence after earning the Stuttgart Open title in the most earnest way, beating both world’s No.2 Iga Swiatek 6-3 3-6 6-2 and world’s No.1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-4 6-1 in the same tournament. Sevastova made it to the second round after defeating Anastasia Pavlyunchenkova 6-4 7-5 in the first round. The 35-year-old has a career 68.4 percent win rate on clay and 65.8 percent in second-round matches, making her a tricky opponent even for the reigning Stuttgart Open champion.
