Less than 24 hours after coming through with an absolute stunner, Marin Cilic is now eyeing a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championship as he goes up against another Aussie, Alexei Popyrin, on Wednesday. What a way to end a two-match slump for Cilic as he defied the odds to beat an in-form Alex De Minaur 6-2 3-6 6-3 in the first round in Dubai. Hampered by injuries and poor results in the past five years, Cilic delivered a vintage performance by racking up 37 points off his first serves and converting four breakpoints. De Minaur, who reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open and finished runner-up in Rotterdam, could not recover after he was broken in the sixth game of the deciding set, allowing Cilic to come away with the win. Popyrin captured his first win of 2025 after taking down Hady Habib of Lebanon 6-2 6-4. He won 93 percent of his firsts serves and converted all three breakpoint chances. Before the breakthrough win, the Australian had gone through a five-match losing streak that began in the third round of the 2024 Paris Masters.

Cilic has changed the landscape in Dubai after knocking over De Minaur. With the Australian out of the tournament, it has become a more wide-open title race for everybody in this ATP 500 event. Cilic proved that he still has the skills to compete at a high level. The question now is can he sustain it? Cilic can pull off more magic if he sticks to his game plan. After all, he did give Carlos Alcaraz a run for his money in Qatar a week ago.
