Iga Swiatek of Poland targets her third WTA 1000 semifinal appearance this year as she goes up against Filipino rising star Alexandra Eala in the quarterfinal of the 2025 Miami Open on Wednesday.
Swiatek bumped up her record to 21-5 in 2025 after beating veteran Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 7-6(5) 6-3 in the fourth round. The Pole, who reached the semis of Qatar and Indian Wells Open, neutralized Svitolina’s aggressiveness with exquisite counterpunching that produced 45 return points and converted 6 of 11 breakpoints.
Meanwhile, there will be a Filipino in the quarterfinal stage of the Miami Open for the first time in history. 19-year-old Alex Eala defied all odds to book her maiden appearance at a WTA 1000 event. The former US Open Jr. champion showcased a vast repertoire of shots and tactics to take down high-profile opponents such as WTA top-100 Katie Volynets, former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko and reigning Australian Open winner Madison Keys. She earned her spot in the quarterfinals after her opponent Paula Badosa withdrew hours before their match because of an apparent back injury suffered in the previous match vs. Clara Tauson.
