On Sunday, one of the more interesting first-round clashes at the Olympics sees Aussie Alex De Minaur take on German Jan-Lennard Struff. As a typically strong clay-court player, the German is the favorite ahead of this clash, but I take issue with that. De Minaur is a more versatile player in terms of surface, sure, but he's far from a poor clay-court player and is now ranked as thhe sixth-best male player on the planet on the ATP. He deserves more respect.

I'll get straight to it here and say that the early odds on De Minaur are an overreaction to the fact that this will be his first match back on clay after a foray on grass. However, I don't think that is as important as the early odds would have us believe. Struff hasn't looked at his best, since stepping back on to the clay, stuttering beyond Etcheverry in Switzerland, before going out with a whimper against Halys, neither of whom are anywhere near De Minaur's level. This does not bdoe well, as he'll likely need his best to beat the world number six, that's for sure. Factor in that De Minaur thrived at Roland Garros just a few months ago, beating Struff in four set and it really is easy to conclude that early odds of +110 are on the generous side.
