Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain will lock horns with Andrey Rublev of Russia in a mouth-watering second round clash at the 2025 Barcelona Open on Thursday.
Fokina moved on to the round of 16 after ousting former Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-1 6-4. Still hot off a semifinal stint at Monte Carlo, Fokina came out of the gates firing from all cylinders, holding all his serves and breaking Wawrinka’s serves three times for a quick win in the first set. Fokina conceded a service break in the first game of the second set but found his second wind again in the middle of the set, sweeping the last four games to win the match.
Rublev also breezed through to the second round with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jesper De Jong of the Netherlands. Rublev, who lost to Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters, stamped his class early as he captured 77 percent of his first serves and seized five breakpoint conversions.
