Fresh off a stunning upset over a perennial clay court contender, Alexei Popyrin will try to take his amazing run into the semifinal of the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters as the Aussie faces Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain on Friday.
Popyrin delivered the biggest win of his 2025 ATP Tour campaign after he vanquished two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud 6-4 3-6 7-5 in an action-packed duel on Thursday. The Aussie saved two match points in the 9th game of the third set, paving the way for a comeback – which saw him racking up four consecutive games to win the match. The win propelled Popyrin to his third quarterfinal appearance at an ATP 1000 tournament and first round of 8 stint in a clay court Masters tournament.
Davidovich Fokina salvaged another big fish in the tourney as he ousted Indian Wells champion Jack Draper in three sets, 6-3 6-7 (6) 6-4. Fokina, who also eliminated Ben Shelton and Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the previous rounds, seized six breakpoints by attacking Draper’s second serve. He also captured 44 points off his first serves and 26 off the second to complete the upset over the world’s No.6.

Friday’s match will mark the first time they will play each other since turning pro. Although Popyrin defeated Fokina in a junior game in 2017, the playing field is different now at a pro level. Fokina enters the match boasting a 17-8 record after putting together a terrific hardcourt run in the year's first quarter. Popyrin had started the clay court season with only two wins, but he improved his record to 5-7 after posting three impressive wins here in Monte Carlo. Fokina is the favorite because he holds a better record this season. However, I wouldn’t easily rule out Popyrin because the Aussie has shown incredible shot-making and composure to outlast three quality opponents in consecutive three-set matches.
