The Alabama Crimson Tide make their 1st Final Four appearance in program history Saturday night. Unfortunately, it comes against the defending national champions who have been an absolute buzzsaw throughout the tournament. The winner will head to the national championship to face the winner of the Purdue/NC State matchup. UConn is in familiar territory and would love nothing more than to win back-to-back titles and cement Danny Hurley’s legacy as arguably the best coach in UConn history. While the previous matchup for Bama was a contrast in styles, this one will be a bit different. Both teams score at a high rate with UConn being ranked 27th in points per game (81.1) and Bama being #1 with 90.8ppg. UConn does their scoring very efficiently and plays at a much slow pace than Bama. However, Hurley’s group does have the ability to pish the ball and get quick scores if needed

UConn has won their 4 tournament games by an average of 27.75ppg. We do not have the stat on hand but that must be up there with largest average margin of victory by any team in a single tournament. Bama has been a bit more tested having snuck by UNC by 2 and then defeating an extremely scrappy Clemson team 89-82. They will need all the fire power they can muster to keep up with the defending champs. The Clingan/Nelson battle will be the game within the game. If Nelson can get Clingan in some early foul trouble, it will serve the Tide very well.

UConn is healthy as they head into this Final Four matchup but not the same can be said for the Tide. 4th leading scorer and top 3-point shooter, Latrell Wrightsell Jr is questionable with a head injury after he sat out the team’s previous 2 games. He was shooting 62.5% from long range prior to getting injured in the tourney. However, Mark Sears has been the catalyst for seemingly everything with the Bama offense and looks to continue his torrid scoring pace that sits at 24.2ppg in the tournament. For UConn, they look to lean on Donovan Clingan who took his game to another level during this tournament. His scoring is up from 12.4ppg to 15.8ppg and his rebounding numbers from 6.9rpg to 10.0rpg.

While both Bama (3rd) and UConn (1st) rank in the top 5 of offensive efficiency, Bama takes a seat on the defensive end. UConn sits at 4th on the defensive end while Bama is just 105th. Bama likes to get out and run and play a high scoring game, their problem is going to be getting stops against this potent UConn offense. We believe the only way that Bama can cover is if they jump out to an extremely large early lead. Outside of that happening, UConn should be able to roll like they have all tournament long.
