Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2024
Fans were treated to lots of aggressive play last week, while we certainly ended with a few low-scoring days at El Cardonal in Mexico, but we probably shouldn’t expect to see a repeat of such antics this time around.
After all, when it comes to coastal golf, the wind often blows, and at times, it blows hard at Port Royal, which will make it harder for players to score so freely.
The course is on the short side, featuring a couple of very reachable Par 5’s, but big elevation changes throughout and potentially blustery conditions will increase the difficulty, so don’t be surprised if the winning score is a fair bit lower than the -24 recorded by Austin Eckhart in Mexico last week.
Last week’s bets had mixed results, though with Joel Dahmen successfully hitting the top 20 (+450), finishing in a very respectable 14th after four solid rounds, level-stakes profit was made for the second tournament on the spin.
Let’s get into the golf bets for this week, and as always, don’t forget to check out all our upcoming sports betting picks.
Seamus Power to win/top 10 finish: +1600 & +200 with FanDuel
As we approach another event containing very few top players, I’m drawn to Seamus Power, who has winning form at Port Royal, having won this event back in 2023.
The Irish payer didn’t feature last year, probably because he didn’t need to, but as he’s slipped outside of the world’s top 100, he’s back on the island of Bermuda looking for redemption, and given both his previous efforts at this place and his recent form, I wouldn’t be too surprised if he finds it.
This will be the fourth time that Power has played in this event, making the cut all four times, winning it in 2023 and finishing narrowly outside of the top 10 in 2022. Such form catches the eye, as does the fact that he ranks as the best player in the field in terms of average 18-hole score (of those to have played the event four times or more).
We’ve seen the 37-year-old step on the gas a little in recent weeks too, with him finishing T11 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, T11 at the Black Desert Championship and T13 at El Cardonal last week.
He also ranks as the fifth-best player in this field for strokes gained: total across the last eight events. Such form points to a player who has his game in good working order, which bodes well ahead of a return to the scene of his last PGA Tour win.
Bet on the PGA Tour with FanDuel
Ben Griffin to win/top 10 finish: +2300 & +230 with FanDuel
Ben Griffin is yet to secure his first win on the PGA Tour, but if recent form is anything to go by, then that could soon change.
As the world number 72, Griffin stands as one of the higher-ranked players in the field in Bermuda this week, while his last couple of efforts have been encouraging. He finished very strongly to secure a T24 finish at the Zozo, before playing well in spells at El Cardonal last week, despite that course not really suiting his game.
Short courses are where Griffin typically thrives, while he’s absolutely a player who prefers to get down to business on Bermudagrass.
Positively, unlike many in the line-up here, Griffin has previous experience at Port Royal, playing his way to a third-place finish at the Robert Trent Jones Sr designed venue back in 2022.
You’d have to say that the 28-year-old, who sits inside the top 10 for strokes gained: total over the last handful of events, has improved since then, and after some decent efforts in recent weeks, he’s worth betting on to enjoy himself.
Joel Dahmen top 10/top 20 finish: +600 & +260 with FanDuel
Last but by no means least, I’m sticking with Joel Dahmen to play well after his promising effort in Mexico last week.Unlike the two players above, who’ve shown a clear liking for Port Royal, Joel Dahmen has never featured at the Bermuda course before, but he’s a man who typically likes a coastal challenge, as a string of positive efforts at venues not dissimilar to Port Royal shows.
We also know that Dahmen is a bit of a wind-play expert, so if it blows this week, he’s definitely one to watch out for.
One of the most consistent players in Mexico last week, shooting worse than 70 in none of his four rounds on his way to posting a T14 finish, Dahmen shifted through the gears to deliver his best performance for a while. It’s not uncommon for the Washington native to put together a positive run of results once finding form either, so I'm not quite sure that the early market has got it right here, leavign Dahmen available at odds that look a little generous.
