Definition of System betting and how it works
Table of contents
Welcome to our guide to system betting! A look at these popular betting options from your standard win bet and accumulator.
Let’s begin by answering the key question:
What is a System Bet?
A system bet is a mixture of combination bets based on a number of selections made on a bet slip. It is a way of betting on multiple choices, but in a way that means if not all your selections win, you could still generate a return.
How does a System Bet Work?
A system bet works by covering the different winning permutations on a bet, depending on the number of selections. For example, on a three-selection system bet, there are the following possibilities.
- No selection wins.
- Selection A wins, but Selections B and C lose.
- Selection B wins, but Selections A and C lose.
- Selection C wins, but Selections A and B lose.
- Selections A & B win, but Selection C loses
- Selections B & C win, but Selection A loses
- Selections A & C win, but Selection B loses
- All selections win.
In this system bet, you can cover the three options where two selections win (highlighted in bold). This would be known as a 2 of 3 system bet. It would cost you 3x your unit stake to place this bet to cover the three possible winning bet scenarios shown above.
As you increase the number of selections on your bet, the number of possible system bets increase. However, so does the number of lines you need to cover with each bet.
While 2 of 3 is a name for a system bet, they are often called by other more common names (which we will describe in the Common System Bets section below).
How does a System Bet differ from a standard accumulator bet?
The main differences between a system bet and an accumulator are:
- Stake - A system bet may require more lines to be covered with the bet, which will increase the total value of the bet as you will need several unit stakes to make the system bet. With an accumulator, you only bet one unit stake.
- Winners - With an accumulator, all selections must win. With a system bet, you can generate a return not all your selections win, but enough to make at least one of your covered lines a winner.
- Bets - An accumulator is one bet. A system bet is many bets combined together.
What are some of the most common System Bets?
Outlined below is a list of some of the most common system bets. They are differentiated by the number of selections and bets required to cover all the different accumulator (and sometimes single selection) options.
We will show you the number of selections required for each system bet, the number of betting lines needed to cover all options for that bet, as well as the different type of bets you will be covering with each type of bet.

Where can I locate System Bet options at my chosen sports betting site?
It is very easy to place system bets with your bookmaker. All you need to do is add your chosen number of selections to your bet slip. Then when you have completed this, open the bet slip.
The default option will most likely be to back your selections as a single bet for each selection or as a single accumulator bet. However, there will be an option to show more multiple betting options.
On bet365 Sport, for example, clicking on the More Multiples tab will bring up the selections of multiple bets you can make.
Based on your selections, you will be able to select your preferred system bet from this list.
Flexible System Bet Options at Bookmakers
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that bookmakers offer win-only system bets. You can also back your system bet selections as an each-way option.
However, doing this will double the number of lines that you need to cover with your bet.
For example, if you place a Heinz bet, then to back each option to win is 57 separate bets. But to back those selections each way, it is 114 bets as you cover both the win and place options for each possible selection.
Another option many bookmakers offer is the chance to bet on just a certain type of bet within a system bet.
So for example, in the same Heinz bet above, you could just back the 15 double options, or the 20 trebles, or 20 Four-folds. Or you could back any combination of the options that make up the Heinz together. Such as backing the Trebles and Four-fold options, but not backing the Doubles, Fivefold or sixfold accumulator.
As you can see, top bookmakers offer outstanding flexibility when it comes to making system bets, allowing you to tailor your betting options and stake size as you require.
