What is Curling ?

Curling is a winter sport where two teams compete by sliding granite stones on a sheet of ice, aiming to land their stones on a 12-foot-wide target. The team that manages to get one or more stones closest to the target on each ‘end’ of the game wins the same number of points as they landed stones closest to the target for that end, provided they finish inside the target (‘the house’).

The target comprises four concentric circles, starting with a blue circle on the outside, a white circle inside, then a smaller red circle, and finally, the centre of the target is a white circle. There is one target at each end of the playing area.

A Curling team comprises four players: the ‘Skip’, the team captain, who is the leading strategist and who decides where, how and how fast to slide the stone, and the other three players sweep the ice to try and assist the stone to land where the Skip wants. In a doubles game, there are just two players per team. Usually, a curling match comprises between eight and 15 ends.

The game originated in 16th-century Scotland, with the official rules drawn up in 1838. It became an Olympic Sport in the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, but was not officially added as an Olympic Sport until 1998.

Popular curling betting options

Curling is a game that is played by teams of male competitors and is equally popular with female players, too. Most big tournaments are geared around male or female only teams, but there are a number of mixed competitions which feature both male and female players. The pinnacle of the sport is the World Curling Championships and Winter Olympic Games.

The sport has a good following in several countries, notably Canada, Great Britain, the United States, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden.

Most of the top curling competitions below are international-based events and tend to be the tournaments and contests that are most likely to be available to bet on. For non-international events, teams are usually club teams competing in domestic league or knockout competitions.

Curling betting guidance and tips

What have we learned from our experience of betting on Curling in the past? In this section, we hope you will benefit from our experience by offering you some key betting guidance and hints and tips on how to get the most of your curling wagers.

  • The team that slides the last stone has the advantage : unlike some sports, such as tennis, where going first (serving) is an advantage, curling sees the team playing last as an advantage over their opponent.
  • In-play betting may offer more scope for longer odds bets: momentum in a game of curling can change quickly. As such, in-play betting on games can see large changes in odds for markets.
  • Outright markets offer good value: in bigger tournaments, you can find better odds on both to win and each way markets on outright tournament winner bets than you can on single market result bets.
