Shanghai Open – Catch every game of this ATP Masters event!
The Shanghai Open, or Shanghai Rolex Masters, is one of the Masters 1000 series of tournaments on the ATP tour. All the top male players on tour will usually participate in this event which was first contested back in 2009. The tournament is played on hard courts, outdoors at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in the Minhang District of Shanghai. The show court, is the Arena’s Grand Stand Court 1, is the fifth largest tennis arena in the world and it has its own retractable roof.
The event is unique as it is the only one of the ATP Tour Masters series of events that is not played either in Europe or North America. The tournament is held in October each year, with the top eight seeds earning a place in the second round, while the remaining 56 players will start their tournament in the first round. A considerable prize pool ($8.8m) was available for the tournament in 2023, with the winning singles champion pocketing well over $1.2m.
Three players have dominated the event since the first Shanghai Open was contested. Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer are all multiple-times winners of the event, while others to have had their name etched on the trophy include Nicolay Davydenko, Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz. Players that have reached the final in Shanghai but who have not won an event include Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro, Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Roberto Bautista Agut, Borna Coric, Alex Zverev and Andrey Rublev. Alongside the very competitive singles event, there is also a major men’s doubles tournament too which has seen winners include Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek (twice), John Isner and Jack Sock and the Bryan brothers Bob and Mike.
