There are no matches for ATP Rolex Shanghai Masters Tennis. Here are the odds for the past days.
The ATP Shanghai Open, or Shanghai Rolex Masters, is the only ATP Masters 1000 event to take place outside of Europe or North America each year. Although founded in 2009, there have been a number of tournaments in Shanghai that have preceded this big event for male players. Professional tennis in Shanghai dates back to 1996, when the first Shanghai Open was contested. Then, by 2002 the Tennis Masters Cup was also being contested in the city at the end of the tennis year. The success of that tournament saw the ATP award the Tennis Masters Cup to Shanghai from 2005 to 2007 inclusive.
A new venue, the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, was built to host the Tennis Masters Cup which was held for four consecutive years from 2005 to 2008.
At this time China sought to attract the WTA and ATP Tours to the country to help grow the sport domestically and across Asia. Due to the success of events in Shanghai, the ATP announced that from 2009, a new tournament would be played in Shanghai at the Qizhong Facility. It would be an ATP World Tour Masters event and would use the name the Shanghai Open. Although it would later be sponsored by Rolex to become the Shanghai Rolex Open for marketing reasons.
The inaugural tournament was held in 2009 and but for a hiatus of three-years due to the pandemic, has been played every year since. The tournament is a hard court event played outdoors, although the main show court does have a retractable roof which can be closed during inclement weather.
The Shanghai Open is the flagship event of what has become known as the Asian Swing on the ATP Tour. This series runs from late September through October and also includes the Thailand Open, Malaysian Open, the China Open and the Japan Open Tennis Championships. Some of the top male stars to have won the tournament since it began in 2009 include Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer.
Given its eminent position as part of the Asian Swing on the ATP Tour, the Shanghai Open is a very popular betting event for many tennis fans. So let’s explore a little more about betting on the event, with a look at two key facets of betting; the markets and the odds.
Shanghai Open Betting Markets and Odds Explained
If you are thinking of betting on the Shanghai Open tennis tournament, then you will need to know about two things. Betting markets and betting odds. Betting Markets are the different options you have to bet on. For example, popular betting markets at the Shanghai Open would include betting on a player to win a match, or how many games a player will lose during a game, or how many aces that they will serve in the match.
There can be a huge selection of betting markets. They can be either Futures markets (such as betting on who will win the tournament), Pre-Match markets (betting on who will win a match), or In Play betting markets. These latter markets are available when a match is in progress and is the most dynamic form of betting there is.Odds are the prices stated for the different possible outcomes on any market. So for example, if you wanted to bet on a player to win a match, then there are just two possible outcomes. Either Player A will win, or Player B will lose (as there can be no drawn matches in tennis).
The key thing to note for odds is that they are more than simply a statement of the price a bookmaker is offering. It is also a statement of how likely the bookmaker feels an event will happen (implied probability), as well as being the mechanism which you can use to work out how much you stand to win if your bet is successful.
Markets and odds are inextricably linked in all forms of betting. But how are odds calculated? Let’s find out below.
How are Shanghai Open betting odds calculated?
It is important to know about betting markets and odds when betting on the Shanghai Open. It is also useful to know and understand how those odds are decided for each betting market.
The actual process for producing odds is a very complex one and nowadays, it is a task completed by a computer running a very complex calculation called an algorithm. What this calculation does is take into account a huge number of factors for the sporting event in question and the markets available and from the data it assesses, it will produce a set of odds for the betting site in question.
These odds will only be the start of the process. That’s because when the odds go live and people can bet on them, the amount of money each option in a betting market attracts, will lead to the odds being altered. Selections that attract lots of money will see their prices shorten, reducing the bookmakers' risk on that market. Contrastingly, markets that don’t attract as much money will see their odds lengthen to attract more bets from punters at greater odds.
These movements are shown by the changing odds on selections as you head towards the start of the event. When the event starts, the prices are finalised (starting price) and the betting on that market will close.
As you can see, the whole process of calculating odds is very complex and dependent on many factors. Understanding this is the first step in understanding why the odds are so important when it comes to making a bet on the Shanghai Open, or indeed any other betting market.
Why are odds important for your Shanghai Open bets?
We know odds can be used to work out winnings and also as an indicator of how probable a bookmaker thinks an event will happen in a market. For example, a bet of even money (2.00), means that the bookmaker feels there is an about even, 50/50 chance that this outcome will occur. Odds of 3/1 suggest that there is a 25% chance of that outcome occurring.
The value of odds though is only visible when you look in a broader context. Every bookmaker offers their own odds for markets. But as a betting enthusiast, you want the best odds. Otherwise, you could be missing out on more winnings than you would get.
Odds are important in many ways, but one is that the difference in odds from bookmaker to bookmaker means that you can often get better returns for the same bet with a different bookmaker. These differences in odds may only be small, but they can quickly grow into a significant amount of money over a year’s worth of betting.
Register with a variety of bookmakers!
We now know a fair bit about the different Shanghai Open tennis betting markets you can find. Including what the odds on those markets mean, how they are calculated and why they are important. Now it is time to take the final step in the process and ensure that you get the best odds possible when you make a Shanghai Open bet.
How can you do that? One bookmaker isn’t going to offer the best odds on every bet that you want to make all the time. That is absolutely correct. Bookmakers have their own calculations and algorithms to come up with their own prices for the same event.
So the best and in truth, only way you can get the best odds on a bet all the time is to register with a number of bookmakers. The more bookies you join, then the more likely it is you will be able to place your chosen bet at the best price possible.
For example, let’s say your favourite bookmaker is offering a Shanghai Open bet you want to make at odds of 3/1. But you use an odds comparison service and discover you can get 11/4 with some other bookmakers, 4/1 with some others and even 5/1 with one.
If you were going to bet £50 on the bet, why would you take the 3/1 option? You could win a maximum of £200 (£150 winnings, £50 stake returned) at those odds. Whereas, if you take the 5/1 odds for the same bet, a win here would offer you £300 in total (£250 in winnings, £50 stake returned).
