Every year, the Canadian Open (National Bank Open) takes place for both men’s and women’s tour professionals in two venues across Canada. One year Montreal will host the men’s event, with the women’s tournament taking place in Toronto, then the following year the men will play in Toronto and the women in Montreal.
The Montreal event is held at the IGA Stadium, while those competing in the second event in Toronto play their matches at Sobeys Stadium. This means one year you will have an ATP Montreal and a WTA Toronto, then the next a ATP Toronto and a WTA Montreal!
It is a somewhat unique set up on both tours to see an event shared across two venues in such a way. But that is not the only aspect of this famous old tournament that makes it a somewhat unique event in the calendar. For both WTA and ATP tour members.
Also known as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers for sponsorship reasons, the tournament is played in early August each year. It sits right before another Masters 1000 and Premier 1000 event, the Cincinnati Open, both of which come just a couple of weeks before the final Grand Slam tournament of the season, the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadow in New York.
It was founded in 1881 as a men’s event with the women’s event following in 1892. That makes the Canadian Open the second oldest tournament in the world, after Wimbledon. For many years, the tournament was contested on clay, switching to hard courts in 1979.
Many of the game’s greatest players have won the Canadian Open. Some of the most successful women’s players include 10-time champion Lois Moyes Bickle, four-time winners Chris Evert and Monica Seles, three-time champions Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams and Simona Halep.
The most successful male players include Ivan Lendl (6 wins), Charles Smith Hyman and Rafael Nadal (5 wins), Novak Djokovic (4 wins) and Andre Agassi, Beals Wright and Andy Murray (3 wins).
As one of the key events leading up to the U.S. Open, it is easy to see why this tournament attracts plenty of betting from fans. With that in mind, let’s now explore a little more about the odds and betting markets you can find on the Canadian Open.

Canadian Open Betting Odds and Markets Explained
If you want to bet on the Canadian Open, then markets and odds are the fundamentals of betting. You need to understand what each is and how they are related.
It is simple to understand betting markets. They are simply the potential events in a tennis match at the Cincinnati Open that a bookmaker will accept bets on. The same is true for any other bet made on any other sport or non-sport.
Markets can be futures betting markets (a bet on who will win the Canadian Open), a bet on a match (which player will win between the two contesting a match) or an In Play bet on a market that changes as the match is played (such as which player will win the next point).
When it comes to betting, odds are the driving force behind all betting markets. Without odds, betting markets are redundant, and vice versa. Many people think odds are simply what prices a bookmaker puts on potential outcomes in an event. Such as who will win in a Canadian Open tennis match. In truth, there is a lot more to them than that.
Odds are an expression of the implied probability of a stated event. For example, a bookmaker prices a tennis match with Player A at odds of 1/5 and Player B at odds of 5/1. The implied probability of these events is that Player A has an 80% (4 in 5) chance of winning, while Player B has just a 20% (1 in 5) chance of winning.
Furthermore, odds can be expressed in a number of ways too. Common formats include decimal odds (2.00, 4.50, 6.73 etc), fractional odds (4/1, 6/4, 11/8 etc) and American odds (+100, -200 +5000, etc).
Fractional and decimal odds are used more frequently in the UK and Europe and for beginners decimal odds are the easiest to use as the calculation to work out your potential winnings is much simpler.
This brings us onto another important use for odds. They are the mechanism by which you can understand how much your bet stands to win.
Let’s say a punter placed a £100 bet on Player A in the example shown above at odds of 1.20. In this example, Player A would win £100 x 1.2 = £120. £20 in winnings and their £100 stake back. But if the punter backed Player B with a £100 bet and Player B won, then the punter would win 5 x £100 = £500.
We have a clear grasp of what betting markets are, what odds are, their formats and what they mean in terms of probability. So now let’s turn our attention to the bookmakers and how they actually come up with the odds in the first place. We will also look at what they do to them once the betting markets open and people start to place their bets.

How do bookmakers calculate Montreal Open betting odds?
Understanding how bookies calculate odds, and what the changes in odds mean when a betting market is open is useful to understand.
Initially, a bookmaker will use a special calculation to price up a market. This process is a kind of algorithm that considers a massive amount of data to come up with viable odds for the different outcomes possible in that event. So, for a Canadian Open tennis match winner market, it would give you odds on both Player A to win and Player B to win for that market.
Once the market is open, punters will bet money on either of the two outcomes, Player A to win, or Player B to win. If a greater percentage of the money is bet on Player A to win, then the bookmaker will shorten the odds on that market to ensure their risk is mitigated.
While shortening the odds on Player A, they may also lengthen the odds on Player B to win in order to attract more people to bet on that outcome instead. By these changes, this mitigates the risk for the bookmaker.
So when one player’s odds have shortened, say from 2/1 down to 6/4. then that means that there has been more betting activity on this player, than their opponent.

Why are betting odds so important for your Canadian Open bets?
Given how we have looked at what markets and odds are. What odds mean in terms of the probability of an outcome occurring and how they are calculated and react when people place bets. It is already abundantly clear that odds are hugely important in sports betting.
That’s not just the case for Canadian Open bets. It’s true for any sport. But the real value of odds lies in the fact that every bookmaker has their own odds for the same market.
And due to slight differences in their calculations, what they deem as an acceptable risk and a host of other factors, that means odds can be very different from one bookmaker to the next.
This is a positive and important thing to note for punters. Different odds means that it is always going to be beneficial to bet with the bookmaker offering the best odds.
That means more profit and this is another key reason why odds are so important.
But to realise that value, we need to make one final step in the process.

Why you should bet with multiple bookmakers!
The best odds are never always available with the same bookmaker, so in order to access them, you need multiple accounts with different providers.
This offers two benefits to the punters. The first is that you will obviously be able to access the best value odds on a market far more often. This means your winning bets will return more.
But the second benefit is that you can activate a whole host of additional welcome bonus offers and other site promotions. This will give you a chance to earn bonus funds to bet with on the site, or some other different bonuses, such as Free Spins.
So having multiple accounts may be more work in terms of organisation. But the benefits are getting the best possible return on your bets, thanks to better odds!
