Best K-League Betting Odds (South Korea)

South Korea - K-League
Upcoming K-League matches

Before you start, you need to understand the principle of odds to fully master the field of sports betting. These are published by sports betting sites, which are called bookmakers and offer several possibilities for betting on football matches, including the K-League (in South Korea). The amount you invest in a sports bet will determine your potential winnings if your bet is successful. As this article is focusing on the K-League we are naturally going to be referring to K-League betting odds.

How are the K-League odds calculated?

The various bookmakers on the French market work like most of their colleagues around the world. They use predictive algorithms that take into account hundreds of statistics for each K-League match, all with the aim of offering several odds on the same game. For the bettor, it's quite simple to understand: odds are nothing more than a probability that an outcome will occur. Thus, for K-League matches, the mechanism will be the same as for all other football matches in the world. To summarise, it is important to bear in mind that the higher the odds of a bet, the lower the probability of the result occurring. And conversely, the smaller the odds, the higher the probability of the result occurring according to the bookmakers' statistical calculations. In order to understand this, let's take a concrete example of a match in the South Korean top flight between Ulsan Hyundai and Suwon.

Let's imagine that the home team Ulsan Hyundai are at the top of the Korean league standings and won the championship last season. For the visiting team, the dynamics are completely opposite as Suwon are second to last in the league and are more than 30 points behind their opponents in the overall standings. With all this information, it is only natural that the home side are the favourites to win the match. A bet such as "Ulsan to win" will fetch rather low odds (around 1.20), because it is assumed that the one of the best current clubs in the league should win the match much more often than not. On the other side, the odds for the "Suwon to win" bet will be quite high (minimum of 6.00), as the chances of this team winning are low if we take into account the ranking and the recent head-to-head between the two teams. It is also important to know that the odds on K-League matches can vary from one bookmaker to another. Indeed, several parameters come into play to calculate the probability of success of one team or another: the strength of the two teams, the location of the match, the team compositions (injury and suspension), the rivalry of the match (derby), the opposition of style of the clubs of the Korean league, etc.

Finally, you should know that you will see fluctuations in the odds for the same match over the course of K-League matches. This means that there will be events during the match that will influence the final result and therefore the odds. To clarify, let's take the example of the match between Ulsan and Suwon. Let's imagine that during the first half a player of the home team was red-carded and, since this event, the visiting team created the more dangerous chances. As the game had changed, this was not what the bookmakers had expected before kick-off. They will now take this new parameter into account to update the odds because the balance of power between the two teams is quite different. This will result in a change in the odds on the final result of the match for all punters. For example, the odds for Suwon's success will decrease from 6.00 (at the beginning of the match) to 4.00 with this numerical superiority. On the contrary, the odds for the favourites, Ulsan, will rise sharply, reaching 2.50 at the end of the second half instead of 1.20 at the beginning of the game. The odds of the draw will likely plummet as well because, from now on, it is highly probable that the two teams will be neutralised. This same mechanism will appear for all K-League matches, and it will be done instantly with very little latency depending on the scenarios that will occur.

How to use K-League odds?

Depending on the K-League matchups, different bookmakers will likely lay different odds. This can often be beneficial for sports bettors because it allows them to choose the best possible price on the bet that they want. The most important thing for bettors is to be able to quantify their winnings. To find out quickly, you need to do a simple mathematical calculation which is to multiply the odds by the amount you are going to invest (odds x stake = bet winnings). It’s incredibly useful to master that simple calculation because it is thanks to this that you will know your expected winnings of a bet. Another important aspect of mastering sports betting is to understand the parallel between your prediction and the odds that the bookmakers offer. Indeed, only in this way can you really know if your K-League prediction is in line with the market logic.

Let's take the example of a match between Pohang and Seongnam. You have analysed the match beforehand with as much information as possible and you have selected a win for Pohang, who are playing at home against a team that has been in poor form this year. Of course, you have looked at the different odds for the match, and you see that the odds for the team's eventual home win are posted at 1.40 by the bookmakers. There is therefore a form of logic in the relationship between your analysis and the proposed odds since each party (the sites and yourself) is unanimous on the chances of success for Pohang. In this case, you will be able to make your prediction with peace of mind, as everything seems normal. However, if you realise that there is a significant difference between the posted odds (for Pohang to win) which are higher than expected (say 1.95), then you are in a situation where an anomaly appears and you must try to resolve it. It may be that, due to a lack of data on the match, you have missed something important in your analysis. It is certainly true in some matches that not all the necessary information is available. It is therefore important to have the official compositions of the teams in order to know what the coaches' intentions are for the match.

To come back to our example, we’re going to assume that Pohang's lineup is the best possible that they have. After eliminating that as a possibility you check if the match is not played behind closed doors or on neutral ground. These parameters will have a significant impact on the final result of the match. After some research, you have realised that there is information that you did not have, so you have to integrate it into your analysis and see if it changes your prediction or not. Finally, it is also possible that your opinion is different from the bookmakers regarding the strengths or weaknesses of a team. The bookmaker may feel that a team is playing above its capabilities at the moment and thus, its real level, so the site will leave the odds fairly high on it, or vice versa. Generally, at the beginning of the season, sports betting sites base their odds on the results of the previous season, so if a team was not excellent and no matter how much the team changed (transfer, new coach) there can be errors in the odds. There are often surprises at the beginning of the season, because the big teams are not yet playing at their true level and therefore there are good opportunities to seize on the outsiders (like the promoted teams for example). In any case, if your analysis is complete, you should trust yourself by betting on the selected team. This should be repeated for all K-League matches.

Bet on the winner of the K-League with futures markets

About your K-League sports bets, note that you can also make them on the competition itself. Futures betting is often very enticing for players as it allows them to benefit from good odds by betting on the various teams of the South Korean first division with the possibility of determining the winner of the competition. Bettors can also play markets such as which teams will be relegated or finish on the podium. The other advantage of betting on these futures markets is that you can do it at different periods of the season; before the Korean championship starts, in the middle of the season, and even a few days before the end of the championship. Logically the odds will fluctuate according to the general ranking of the moment. These types of bets allow you to follow your teams as closely as possible and to keep you on the edge of your seat for several weeks or months, unlike the classic bets which last only the 90 minutes that the match runs for.

The aim of sports betting is to maximise your winnings and it should be no different with your K-League bets. To be successful in this endeavour, you need to have the best odds possible in the betting market. For example, a similar sports bet can see the odds vary by as much as 10% per match across different bookmakers. We’ll let you do the calculation over the whole season but make no mistake that it certainly adds up in the long-run.

Let's finish with a final example in a K League game between Seoul and Jeonbuk where you are going to invest €100 on the visiting team's victory. After looking at the odds of the match, you will notice that Pohang's victory is offered at an average of 1.65 odds, except for one bookmaker who offers it at 1.74. It is therefore much more beneficial for you to place your £100 with this operator to win £74 in net profits, compared to an average of £65 with the competitors.
