Before you get into placing your bets on the Concacaf Nations League (CNL), it’s important to have a solid understanding of betting odds and how the betting markets operate. We’ll start with betting odds. Bookmakers provide odds to their users as a way to place bets on the outcome of an event. The number you see (the odds) is simply a numerical representation of the probability of the event occurring or not. They also provide the bettor with a way to determine how much they stand to win in the event of a successful wager. For example, a €100 bet at odds of 1.55 will return €155 (and thus, a profit of €55) should it wind up winning.
How are CNL betting odds calculated?
The bookmakers have a number of tools at their disposal when setting their betting lines. They look at a number of different factors to come up with what they determine to be an accurate reflection of the probability of an event taking place. Many of the top betting sites have access to advanced algorithms, detailed databases of statistics, historical data and trend analysis. A general rule of thumb to follow that will make things easier is that the lower the odds (e.g. 1.33), the more likely that particular event is to occur. Likewise, the higher the odds for a bet (e.g. 6.50) the less likely it is to take place.
For a practical example, let’s take a look at the scheduled semi-final matchup between the United States and Jamaica. The USA are the defending champions and their two championships is the most in the five-year history of this competition. They’ve been on an upward trajectory over the last few years and have moved all the way up to 12th in the official FIFA rankings. Despite Mexico still remaining in the competition, the United States will likely be the favorites to defend their crown and win a second straight title. Jamaica, on the other hand, are on a six-match winless run and are down to 55th in the FIFA rankings. Their best ever result in a Concacaf competition was their back-to-back runners-up finishes in 2015 and 2017 of the Gold Cup.
The United States understandably going to be heavy favorites to get the win in 90 minutes in the first leg on home soil. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see them come in at close to 1.25 or 1.30 odds, given the sizable gap in quality between the two squads. The low odds represents the bookmakers acknowledging that the USA are most likely going to win this game more often than not. Jamaica would therefore come in with very high odds, possibly exceeding the 10.00 mark as a victory for the Reggae Boyz is not a likely outcome.
Rising popularity of live betting
Live betting (also referred to as in-play betting) is growing at a rapid rate and is one of the most popular current forms of betting for users. It’s estimated that live bets account for over 30% of all bets placed. This has led to betting sites placing extra emphasis on their live betting platforms, as it generates a huge amount of action. It’s now possible to live bet on virtually any match and any betting market using this format. This can lead to some very profitable opportunities for sharp bettors. Betting sites rely on algorithms to instantly update the betting odds as it is impossible to monitor thousands of games at the same time. Those who are closely paying attention or watching a specific match may be able to exploit certain situations that the algorithms simply cannot factor in. Practical uses for Concacaf Nations League odds
Now that we have a more sound understanding of betting odds and betting markets, we’ll look at how you can apply these concepts to your own sports betting. The most immediate use of betting odds is that it allows you to quickly determine how much you stand to win from a bet. This is achieved by using the formula: - stake = net profit. For example, a €100 bet at odds of 1.70 will return €170 if it turns out to be a winner. Subtracting the initial stake (€100) leaves us with our net profit of €70. It’s important to keep in mind that different bookmakers will lay different odds for the same bet.
Large discrepancy in the odds
It may come up in your sports betting research that you come across a match that has odds that are way off of what you had initially predicted. If we go back to our example of the United States vs Jamaica in the CNL semi-final, let’s assume that after doing our research and checking the odds, we see that the USA are 1.95 favorites to win the game. This of course should set off alarm bells as it is drastically different from the 1.30 we were initially expecting. It’s up to you now to identify why this is the case. Did you mistake a home match for an away match? Is the entire starting 11 out with food poisoning? Be sure to do your due diligence and make sure you leave no stone unturned.
Identifying value bets
The other side of this coin is a situation where you did thorough research and came to the conclusion that the odds of the match are different, but not drastically different. It could be that you have the United States as 1.15 favorites to get the win. In this situation, despite the heavy odds, there would theoretically be value in backing the USA at their current odds of 1.30. This is down to your estimation of their chances of success (86.96%) being significantly higher than the bookmaker’s estimation (76.92%). In this situation, trust your read and confirm that bet!
Register everywhere!
One of the most important strategies for sports bettors is to sign-up with as many betting sites as possible. There are two massive benefits to doing this. The first, and most important, is that you will substantially increase the pool of available betting odds you have to choose from. Remember, not all betting sites offer the same odds for identical bets. You can often find differences of up to 10% in some cases for the same wager. While it may not seem like a significant amount at first glance, consistently getting the best possible price on all of your bets over the course of an entire season will make a huge difference in your bottom line. It can even be the difference between a winning sports bettor and a losing sports bettor!
The other benefit is being able to take advantage of the sign-up bonuses. Most betting site will offer some kind of bonus for registering a new account. These can sometimes reach up to 100% of your first deposit, effectively doubling your bankroll on that site before even placing a bet.
