Best Superleague Betting Odds (Greece)

Greece - Superleague
Upcoming Superleague matches

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, it is important to understand the basic principle of betting odds to fully understand the world of sports betting. The odds are in fact elaborated by the sports betting sites, which are commonly called bookmakers. Thus, they are the ones who will edit and display several possibilities for the outcome of football matches, including those in the Greek Super League. For each of your sports bets, it is the amount invested that determines your winnings, should your wager be successful. As this article is centred around the Greek Super League, we’ll naturally refer to the Super League odds.

How are the Super League odds calculated?

All bookmakers work in the same way as their colleagues around the world. These sites use their own algorithms by combining various hundreds of statistics from their databases for each Greek Super League match, all in order to display several odds on a single game. For punters, it's easy to understand: the odds of a given event is the probability of that outcome occurring. So, for Super League games, the way it works is similar to any other football game on the planet. In short, you have to keep in mind that the higher the odds on a match, the less likely it is to happen from a probability standpoint. And on the contrary, the lower the odds, the higher the probability of the result happening according to the statistics that the bookmakers have modelled. To understand this, let's take the example of a match in the Greek top flight between Olympiakos and Ionikos.

The team from Piraeus often plays the leading role each season in the Greek league and is a three-time title holder. Ionikos, on the other hand, is the bottom team in the Super League and has 22 points less than their hosts in the overall standings. With all this information, it is logical that the home side will be favoured to win the game. A bet on "Olympiakos to win" will be displayed with low odds (around 1.10), as the chances of success for one of the most successful clubs in the Greek league are very high. On the contrary, the odds for a "Ionikos to win" bet will be quite high (at least 8.00), because the chances of this team winning are very low if we analyse the ranking and the history of direct confrontations between the two teams. It is also important to know that the odds of Super League matches vary according to the operators. Indeed, there are different aspects that will intervene to calculate the probability of victory of one team or another, such as the balance of power between the two teams, the location of the match, the team compositions (injury and/or suspension), the rivalry of the match (if it is a derby), but also the style of play of the Greek league teams, etc.

Finally, you should also know that you will have odds that will vary for the same match, which includes live betting Super League matches. This is because the odds will change when significant events occur during the match that could change the final score. In order to make this clear, let's take the example of the match between Olympiakos and Ionikos. In this scenario, let’s say that the home team has a player sent off which results in Ionikos controlling much of the play and dominating the game with their man advantage. This is a surprise turn, because red cards are generally not foreseeable events before the kick-off. So, the different bookmakers will take into account this new parameter in order to calculate the new probabilities by updating the odds of the match. All the punters who follow the match live will notice a significant change in the odds for the final outcome of the match. For example, the odds for Ionikos' success may decrease from 8.00 (at the beginning of the match) to 3.00 with numerical superiority. And, on the other side, the odds for the favourite, Olympiakos, will increase significantly, perhaps reaching 2.00 after the break instead of 1.10 at the beginning of the game. Logically, it is the odds for a draw that will completely nosedive, as it is now very likely that the two teams will end in a stalemate. The same thing will happen in every Super League match, and the sports betting sites will act instantly according to the facts of the game.

How to use Super League odds?

The most important thing for sports bettors is to know how much you can expect to win after your bet. In order to calculate this very quickly, you need to do this very basic mathematical calculation which is to multiply the odds by the amount you wish to invest (odds X stake = bet winnings). It is therefore  essential to have this calculation in mind, as you will now use it for all your future sports bets. You must also understand the parallel between your prediction and the odds that the bookmakers will offer. Only in this way can you really know if your Super League prediction is in line with the market logic. Let's take another example with a match between PAOK, at the top of the table, and Lamia, towards the bottom. Beforehand, you have analysed this match with as much information as possible and you have opted for PAOK's success, playing at home against a team lacking confidence this season and struggling for survival. Of course, you have the reflex to look at the different odds of the match, and you realise that the odds for the home team to win at the end of the game are displayed at 1.40 at the bookmakers. This seems to be quite logical between your analysis and the proposed odds, because you and the sports betting sites believe that there is a good chance that PAOK will win all 3 points. So, in this case, you are justified in your prediction.

However, if you notice that there is a rather large discrepancy between the odds displayed (for PAOK to win) which are higher than expected (say 1.95), then you are in the situation where some kind of anomaly has to be dug up to try to understand where this difference comes from. It may well be that you are missing something about the match and therefore missed your analysis and final prediction. It is true that for some matches you only have a few parameters and this can explain this. Nevertheless, it is still important to have the official line-ups of both teams in order to determine the real intentions of both coaches for the match. Let's go back to our example, PAOK's team composition is still the best possible and you still don't understand why the odds are displayed at 1.95, a piece of advice: take the time to check that the match is not played behind closed doors or on neutral ground! This will have a huge impact on the final result of the match. If, after several additional searches, you have realised that there is indeed information that you did not have, then you must now factor it into your analysis, and see if it changes your prediction.

Finally, it is also possible that your idea of a team's strengths or weaknesses is different from that of the bookmakers. The bookmakers may think that a team is playing above its real level, so the operators will put high odds on it, or they may underestimate it completely. This can happen especially at the beginning of the season. Indeed, sports betting sites base themselves on the results of the last season and, if a team that did not have good results, and no matter if several important changes took place during the break (promising recruitment, new coach), you will see more or less surprising quotations. There are often a lot of unexpected results at the beginning of the season because the big teams are not yet at their true level. This can create good opportunities on some of the outsiders (for example with the promoted teams). Whatever the case, if your analysis is thorough and detailed, you must have confidence in it by predicting the team that emerges. Of course, this should be repeated for all Super League matches.
