La Liga is back in the spotlight! Spectacular matches, shining stars... and a leading trio in a breathtaking battle for the Spanish league title! Our experts analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the three Spanish giants.

Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid. As we enter the second half of the season in Spain, the 3 giants of Spanish football stand just 6 points apart at the top of the table. Surprise leaders (or not) of the league, Atlético have a comfortable lead over Barça (6 points), but are just one point ahead of a struggling Real Madrid. Enough to say that Atlético are about to lift their 12th league title, their first since 2021? Not for sure. The strength and experience of an eternal Real Madrid, familiar with the most spectacular turnarounds, and the incredible rise of Barça's prodigies, key figures in the rebuilding of the Catalan club, lead us to believe that the season is far from over. And we explain why in our latest Youtube video.

What the odds say

It's interesting to see that, despite the standings, Atlético Madrid are not the bookmakers' favourites. Rated at 4.50 on Bet365, Simeone's men are title contenders behind Barcelona (3.00) and Real Madrid, the main favourites with odds of 1.90.

Surprising? Yes, because Real Madrid are coming off a terrible defeat in the Spanish Supercup against a staggering Barça (2-5). The Merengues seem to be struggling to find a regular rhythm and continue to alternate between the good and the not-so-good this season. It's therefore hard to see them as clear favourites. But the odds are never wrong, and if the bookmakers are betting on Real Madrid, it's because Vinicius and his team-mates have arguments to put forward.

Starting with Kylian Mbappé. After a difficult start, the Frenchman seems to be back to his best. The only man to emerge from the Supercup disaster against Barça has already scored 10 goals in 17 La Liga games. Not bad. If the Frenchman continues on his current path, he could well be the key factor in Ancelotti's men's second half of the season.

Currently in third place for the top scorer award, behind Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, Kylian is back in the running.

Odds for top scorer in La Liga this season:

  • Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona, 16 goals): 1.25
  • Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid, 10 goals): 7.50
  • Raphinha (Barcelona, 11 goals): 8.00

Odds taken from bet365.

Madrid's power, the Cholo's solidity & La Masia's wonderkids

The powerful attacking talents of Mbappé, Vinicius and Jude Bellingham are the major assets of a Real Madrid team too weakened by injuries and too vulnerable defensively. The Merengues are struggling to find consistency this season, but history has shown that Real Madrid can overcome any adversity.

Cholo Simeone's Atlético de Madrid, for their part, are impressing with their 15th win out of... their last 15 matches. A record run that has put Atletico in the lead and allowed them to dream of an 11th league title. Atleti seem to have rediscovered the solidity that has been their trademark over the last 10 years. With a squad strengthened last summer, the Colchoneros are a credible contender. Griezmann, still at the top of his game, Julian Alvarez, definitively integrated or the increasingly effective Alexander Sørloth, offer the Madrid club impressive attacking firepower.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona continue their rebuilding process. Too often weakened by institutional problems, the Catalans manage to keep up the pace on the pitch. But until when? That's the question. Because Barça is capable of the worst and the best. The new year has been refreshing for the Blaugrana, who finished 2024 in a difficult position. Unexpected defeats (against Las Palmas and Leganes) and a clash that went wrong (1-2 loss to Atlético) squandered the Catalans' lead in La Liga. Now relegated to 6 points behind Atlético, Barcelona have no room for error.

But the team-mates of Lamine Yamal, brilliant and favourite to finish as the competition's top assist provider (1.57), are proving at the start of this year that they will be a force to be reckoned with right to the end. Boosted by their Masia prodigies (Yamal, Casado, Balde, Gavi...), Barcelona, the youngest team in the competition, have turned their financial difficulties into a strength. Will it be enough to lift the trophy?
