Who Will Dominate the ODI Series for Australia’s Tour of England?

After proving inseparable in the T20I leg of the series, England and Australia will now prepare for the 50-over format, with five blockbuster matches lined up over the next two weeks. As we gear up for this bitter rivalry, let’s explore some key factors that could shape the outcome of the five-match battle.

Last year we saw these two engage in one of the best Ashes series in recent memory - from the on-field shenanigans, such as Jonny Bairstow's controversial stumping, to the off-field dramatics, specifically when MCC members clashed with the Australian cricketers as they were making their way through the iconic Lord's Long Room.

Indeed, all of those unforgettable moments arrived before the heavens opened and scuppered England's chances of reclaiming the converted urn, and it was the weather that also forced these two to share the spoils in the recent T20 series, with the third and final match washed out without a ball bowled.

Nevertheless, there is still plenty of action in store as we head to the One Day Internationals, and below we'll cover some of the major points that could make this series a profitable one. Historical Head-to-Head Record Between England-Australia

Australia Cricket

This is the oldest rivalry in the 50-format of cricket, as it was these two sides that faced off in the first-ever One Day International match way back in January 1971 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground - a match that Australia won by five wickets.

Fast forward 53 years into the future and it is the Aussies that still lead the head-to-head standings, winning 88 of the 156 matches between the sides, while England have won 63, three games ended in a no-result and two encounters finished in a tie.

However, Australia also have the better recent record in this rivalry, with their most recent victory coming in the Cricket World Cup last year, where they beat the Three Lions by 33 runs in the group stage, putting their opponents’ Super 8 hopes under serious threat.

Prior to that match, the last ODI series between these arch-rivals came in 2022, and again, it was Australia who emerged victorious, claiming a 3-0 clean sweep on their home patch. As it stands, the Baggy Greens have won each of the last five ODI matches between these sides dating back to 2020.

Ones to Watch in the England-Australia One Day International Series

Liam Livingstone

Harry Brook has been named as the captain for England with regular white-ball skipper Jos Buttler ruled out for the series due to a calf injury. Thankfully, from an English perspective, Buttler’s absence did not affect their T20 performance too much, as it paved the way for Liam Livingstone to return to the fold, and the talented all-rounder had an eye-catching run in the shortest format.

Livingstone was instrumental in the Three Lions' incredible victory to tie the series in the second T20, smashing 87 runs off just 47 balls, and he was also the pick of the bowlers, notching up 2/16 in just three overs to claim the Player of the Match Award. The Lancashire all-rounder looks to be in great nick heading into the ODI and could be a contender for the Player of the Series if he hits the ground running.

After David Warner called an end to his illustrious 15-year career after their T20 World Cup disappointment last year, Australia would have known they had a massive void to fill at the top of the order. Cue Travis Head! The Adelaide-born batsman has been in sensational form in all forms of the game over the last few years - he is ranked 18th in the world in ODIs, 14th in Tests, and is the ICC's number one batsman in T20 internationals.

Head smashed an incredible 80 of just 25 balls as Australia chased down Scotland's 154 in the first T20 North of the border last month and gave his side the perfect platform to win the first T20 match against England last week with a brisk 31 in only 14 deliveries , earning the Player of the Match award in that game. The Baggy Greens' opener will be very close to the top of the odds table with most bookmakers in this series and you can lock in a pre-match wager on the 30-year-old to finish as the top scorer right away with William Hill .
