On Which Channels Can You Watch the 2022 World Cup in the UK, South Africa and Nigeria?
The clock is ticking down to the start of the 2022 World Cup. A whole host of the top players in the world will be playing in Qatar. Erling Haaland will be sat at home though after Norway failed to qualify. It’s important that such a massive tournament can be seen by as many people as possible. Subscription channels such as BT Sport and Sky Sports will be covering the tournament but they do not have the broadcast rights for live games. It is the BBC and ITV channels that will be covering the 2022 World Cup in the UK. That has also been the case and long may it continue.
One bonus of staging the World Cup in Qatar is the kick-off times. Matches will be starting at 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm. No late nights (apart from the highlights shows) but expects lots of absentees at work when England and Wales are playing. Just imagine it, watching football coverage from 10am to nearly 9pm, even later if games go to extra time!

BBC Sport - The Traditional Home of the World Cup
The BBC celebrates its centenary this year. They are the traditional home of World Cup coverage. Viewers in the UK will be glued to their television sets on November 21. It’s only the second day of the 2022 World Cup but England will be in action. They take on Iran and the match will be shown live on BBC One and online.
November 25 sees the BBC covering the Wales v Iran fixture. Then comes the biggest group match of all in the UK as England faces Wales on November 29 and the BBC will expect huge viewing figures for that all-British clash that could well decide who qualifies for the knockout stages.
The BBC will also be showing top games such as Spain v Germany, Argentina v Poland and Brazil v Serbia. They also have the UK broadcasting rights for two of France’s three group games and all three of Belgium’s group fixtures.
Their coverage will continue in the knockout stages as the games become increasingly important. They have first pick of the semi-finals and will hope that will feature at least one of the UK countries playing in the World Cup finals.
The channel has first pick of the semi-finals, is sharing television coverage of the tournament in the UK with ITV, which has first and second picks in the last 16 and first pick of the quarter-finals.
No wonder that the BBC head of TV Sport is so excited about the World Cup. "With extensive 24/7 coverage across BBC TV, BBC iPlayer, radio, online and social media, the World Cup promises to be a huge event to wrap up a major sporting year on the BBC,” he said.
New Era at ITV
The other channel broadcasting the 2022 World Cup matches is ITV. This channel is also free to air and available on freeview and online on their new free streaming service ITVX, which launches before the World Cup begins.
That’s going to be good news for football fans. Currently they have the ITVHub online. That show live television as well as being a catch-up service. However, it is notorious for crashing and that’s the last thing you need during a live World Cup game. Hopefully, the new ITVX won’t see that being the case.
Group coverage will include Wales facing the USA on November 21 and the England v USA games on the 25th. Top games being covered include France v Denmark, Brazil v Switzerland and Portugal v Uruguay.
The channel will have picks one and two in the last 16 and pick one of the quarter finals. That hopefully means England and Wales games being on ITV. Niall Sloane is their director of sport. He said: “The ITV Sport team is now looking forward to bringing viewers the very best of the first winter World Cup.”
South African and Nigerian World Cup Coverage
There is a strong African contingent in the 2022 World Cup. Although not making it to the finals, there will be a great deal of interest in the World Cup in South Africa. Their television coverage is being presented by the South African Broadcasting Corporation who are the public broadcasters in the the country.
In Nigeria, MultiChoice will make all 64 World Cup matches available The coverage will be available in several different languages. Their chief executive is John Ugbe and he commented that "GOtv SUPA and Super Sport will be "expanding their offering for football" by adding language options such as Yoruba, Swaahili and Pidgin, There will be the need to download the self-service DStv or GOtv apps to subscribe or upgrade their current package.
