Boniface Bumper New Bayer Leverkusen Deal
As reported by Sky Sports in Germany in recent days, Super Eagles’ Victor Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen have come to an agreement on a one-year contract extension for the striker, which has pushed his existing deal beyond its initial 2028 expiration date. The new agreement between the parties is believed to include a substantial pay raise, effectively doubling the forward’s previous pay packet from €3m to €6m per annum, roughly the equivalent ₦9.5 billion Nigerian Naira.
The decision to extend his contract came after widespread rumours swirled about a potential transfer to Saudi Pro League giants Al-Nassr and Premier League behemoths Manchester United during the winter window. However, Die Werkself were determined to keep hold of their African superstar, who played a pivotal role in their triumphs last season. In 2023-24, Boniface led the team to the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles, while also reaching the final of the UEFA Europa League where his fellow Super Eagles teammate Ademola Lookman emerged victorious with Atalanta.
Boniface joined Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise during the summer transfer window of 2023 and has scored 30 goals while providing 11 assists in 50 matches across all competitions. During his first campaign under Xabi Alonso, the Nigerian international racked up 14 goals and nine assists in 23 league games, and won the Rookie of the Month award four times before being voted Bundesliga Rookie of the Season 2023-24 at the end of the campaign. He also went on to score five goals in the Europa League and netted twice in three games en route to the DFB-Pokal title.
Recently, Boniface recovered from a thigh injury he sustained during Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Rwanda last November. The striker was initially slated to resume action toward the back end of December but a setback in his rehabilitation pushed his return back by another month. Despite this, Die Werkself’s number 22 showed no signs of wear, returning to league duty with a bang by scoring the Bundesliga champs’ opening goal in a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim at the BayArena this past Sunday to keep his side within reach of current league leaders Bayern Munich.
Notably, while the 24-year-old is not short of potential suitors, he has previously admitted that he has no desire to play in the Premier League in the foreseeable future. However, while Leverkusen have secured his services for the time being by making him one of their top earners, there are still reports that suggest Alonso’s side are open to a potential sale should a suitable offer arrive. It is understood that the club will be willing to part ways with their prized asset for a fee of around £45m, though any possible move will likely have to wait until the summer, with the January transfer window now shut across the vast majority of European leagues barring Turkey.
Boniface will be back in action in midweek when Bayer Leverkusen take on Koln in the quarter-final of the DFB-Pokal.
