Akanksha Nitture: India’s Rising Tennis Star

Nitture’s Doubles Rise and Singles Ambitions
India has a long history of producing some of the best sportsmen globally. In recent years, this trend has carried onto the tennis courts where we have seen the likes of Sumit Nagal make history by becoming the first Indian player to win a Grand Slam since the great Leander Paes before the turn of the century.
Saketh Myneni is another name that rose to prominence in 2018 by winning the ATP Challenger title. However, the big question now is: Who will be the next Indian tennis star? As it turns out, the answer to that could be 22-year-old Akanksha Nitture, who is making waves in the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour.
Alongside her partner Soha Sadiq, Nitture is the reigning Indian National Doubles Champion, and the pair reached three consecutive doubles finals at the start of the year. This included the ITF W15 Tennis Tournament in Mysuru, where they did not lose a single set until their clash against Jessie Aney and Riya Bhatia in the final.
In the singles category, Nitture is currently ranked 766th - her highest ever - and has delivered a few impressive performances over the last year. At the KSLTA W15 ITF open, she made a remarkable run to the final and won the first set before losing the next two to another Indian rising star, Tanisha Kashyap.

Nitture Enjoying Solid Start To 2025
The Mahashatra native has carried her solid form from the latter part of 2024 into the New Year, where she is 6-6 in the singles category and has made it to the last 16 in each of her last three tournaments, including the Ahmedabad ITF, Gurugram ITF, and the recently concluded Nonthaburi ITF in Thailand.
Over the course of her career, the Indian tennis star has earned just shy of $20,000 in prize money, including $2,091 this year alone. However, she has yet to earn her first title on the circuit, currently holding an all-time win/ loss record of 45/59 following her exit in Thailand earlier this week.
In a recent interview with India Tennis Daily during the W75 Pune 2025 Tennis Tournament, Nitture was asked by the reporter what she feels she needs to work on to crack the top 500 in the standings. She said:
“I think we all have aspects of our game we want to work on, but for me, mentally is the first thing I want to focus on right now.”
