SportyTrader experts' forecast table on Copa America 2024
At Sportytrader, we are hoping for (and expecting) a superb tournament, with the favourites expected to come out on top according to our analysis. We're expecting a huge final between Brazil and Argentina, a repeat of last year's tournament, and we're expecting Ecuador and Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay to make it through to the last four. Below, you will find details of the aspects we have focused on to draw up this table, as well as our justification for the qualifiers.
What criteria did we use to draw up our forecast?
Of course, it would be pointless to give you our forecast without explaining how our specialists came up with it. In our quest for in-depth analysis and complete information, here are the main elements our experts have taken into account in their analysis:
- The strength of the teams involved
- The form of the key players
- The history of the matches
- Statistics for each nation
- Track record in previous competitions
- Fan support
The main aspect is, of course, the intrinsic quality of each nation and its squad selected to play in the Copa America. As we all know, on paper Argentina and Brazil have a much better team than Bolivia or Costa Rica. While this argument has been taken into account in our predictions for the competition, it is not an absolute truth. A group of lesser players can beat a team of stars on paper, but it still helps to have Vinicius, Rodrygo, Paqueta, Messi or Di Maria in your team.
The current form of the major players in each country is also a very important aspect to take into account. During the group phase, this is all the more important for the smaller nations, who most of the time only have one, two or three big players. If, on paper, the task is already difficult, it becomes almost impossible if the key players are not in form and this argument also carries weight in matches that are difficult to predict, between two teams of a similar level. If Vinicius is fit, for example (as has been the case in recent weeks with Real Madrid), Brazil has a better chance of going far in the competition.
Secondly, the history of the nations taking part in this Copa America 2024 was also important in our thinking about the teams' chances. For example, Brazil lost the last final to Argentina, and this match has been taken into account in our thinking about the final winner between these two teams for this new edition. While this aspect is not always worth taking into account (for example, matches played five or more years ago no longer have any real value today), for the most recent confrontations, it can be interesting to take a minimum interest in them, while remaining fairly distant and thoughtful about these statistics.
Speaking of stats, our specialists have also analysed all the key facts and figures surrounding the nations that will be vying for the title on 15 July. Other aspects, such as performance in previous competitions, whether the Copa America or others (World Cup, for example) or during the qualification phases for the various tournaments, are also important. As you can see, drawing up a prediction table for a competition is no mean feat, and there are many parameters to take into account.
What's more, the slightest event (red card early in a match, major player injured or suspended, lack of success, etc.) can throw it off course, but it's still an interesting exercise to do! Don't hesitate to try your hand at making your own prediction chart!
What are the key facts that drove us to this prediction?
As a reminder, the Copa America 2024 consists of four groups of four nations, with only the top two qualifying for the quarter-finals. By the time the knockout phase comes around, half the teams are out of the running. This is different from the Euros, where many "best third-placed teams" are not eliminated. So here, we had to make some tough choices! To start with Group A, Argentina immediately (and quite logically) emerged as the favourites for first place. Behind them, there was a real battle between Canada and Chile, but we prioritised Chile's experience in this competition.
In Pool B, Mexico and Ecuador will start as favourites against Venezuela and Jamaica, and there was no real debate in this second group. The same goes for the next two groups, with Pool C containing two outsiders in this Copa America 2024, so the United States and Uruguay are expected to qualify for the quarter-finals without too much difficulty. Finally, Group D, with Brazil and Colombia likely to finish ahead of Paraguay and Costa Rica. There's little suspense here either.
Let's move on to the knockout phase to finish. We're in for some great quarter-final action. To begin with, a very interesting Argentina v Mexico match between the big favourites and a team that is clearly not to be underestimated. Messi and his teammates should manage to get through, much as they did at the 2022 World Cup (the future world champions won 2-0). For the second quarter-final, we've chosen Ecuador to go through to the last four rather than Chile! Although still dangerous, this team is still ageing and will need a boost after this Copa America. In the third match, in a very tight encounter, Fede Valverde's Uruguay should overcome James Rodrigues' Colombia. Finally, it's only logical that Brazil should see off the USA, although it won't be so easy for the last finalists in this competition.
It's time for the last four, with a match between Ecuador and Argentina on the programme for this first semi-final. No real hope in sight for the Ecuadorians, we see the defending champions contesting another final. But it's the other semi-final that looks very interesting on paper, with a mouth-watering Brazil v Uruguay clash! The Brazilians narrowly make it through to the last match, in a rematch of the last edition! And, in a very close match, as was the case three years ago (1-0 victory), we once again see Argentina add a new line to their record, and complete a Copa America-World Cup-Copa America hat-trick.
