In sports betting it is essential to manage your capital efficiently. What matters most is not whether you’re right or wrong, but that you know why, how and how much money to bet. By following certain fixed rules and putting in a minimum amount of effort, any sports fan can become a successful punter.

Why bet?

Know why it is important to bet before setting out in search of winnings. You must ask yourself this question. Why bet on this event? There are several possible reasons, all of which are personal. They vary according to your mentality. Three types of gamblers can be identified:

The occasional punter

This player bets mainly for the fun and to enjoy the thrills of sporting events. He or she may often lose in the long term but remains clear-headed and is able to limit his or her losses. These losses do not significantly impair his or her enjoyment of the event.

The winning punter

The winning punter is very often a real sports fan following a carefully developed strategy. This type of player does not see sports betting as a game, but rather as a sport in which the bookmaker is an opponent. There are very few winning punters in sports betting.

The compulsive punter

A compulsive gambler is often in a state of ignorance. This type of punter is capable of making short-term profits but will always want to bet more. The compulsive gambler is sometimes competent, but has no money management skills and may lose astronomical sums over variable periods of time.
Losing compulsive gamblers never consider themselves as such because they have no ability to see themselves objectively. In your eyes, you definitely belong in one of the first two categories!
In a forthcoming article, we will be trying to help you optimise your chances of long-term winnings, in order to feature in the 2nd category.
