Records are made to be broken, and several could be broken by India during the 2025 ICC Trophy. After just two games, there have been some great achievements but what else lies in store?

Along with Australia, India are the only country to have won the ICC Trophy on two occasions. They haven’t lifted the trophy for 12 years but after wins over Bangladesh and Pakistan, they are in a strong position to be the champions this year. India have already become the first country to ever win 20 ICC Trophy matches.

Kohli already breaking records

It’s already been a great tournament for Virat Kohli. He hit an unbeaten century a record-extending 51st in ODIs) in India’s win over Pakistan on Sunday February 23. Surprisingly, that was his first ever ICC Trophy century after five half-centuries.

When reaching 15, the legendary batter became only the second Indian (and third from all countries) to score 14,000 runs in ODIs. Kohli reached 14,000 runs faster than any other player.

He joins Sachin Tendulkar and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara to achieve the feat. He needs a further 150 runs to overtake Sangakkara’s total of 14,234 runs but is way behind Tendulkar’s 18,426. However, Kholi has an average of 57.93, far higher than Tendulkar’s 44.83.

The highest ever scorer in the ICC Trophy is Chris Gayle of the West Indies. He scored 791 runs, but Kohli is closing in on that total with 651 runs. The highest number of runs scored by an Indian in this competition is 701 by Shikhar Dhawan. That’s a figure that looks likely to be beaten by Kohli during this ICC Trophy.

Another record has been set already with the legendary player now having taken 158 ODI catches, more than any other Indian player.

Sharma passes 11,000 ODI runs

Rohit Sharma has already had a memorable tournament. He scored 41 in India’s opening win over Bangladesh. During that innings, he became only the tenth batter (and fourth from India) to pass 11,000 ODI runs.

In the ICC Trophy, Sharma has scored 542 runs and that is only 109 behind Kholi. A further 58 runs will see him become only the fifth Indian to score 600 runs in the ICC Trophy.

Great start for Shami

mohammed shami

India’s top bowler Mohammed Shami doesn’t want to be left out when it comes to breaking records. He began this tournament well when taking 5-58 against Bangladesh.

The most wickets taken in an ICC Trophy tournament is 13. That total has been achieved by Pakistan’s Hasan Ali in 2017 and the West Indian Jerome Taylor in 2006/07.

Shami didn’t take a wicket against Pakistan, but he still just needs eight more wickets to match that record.  The most taken by an Indian bowler in a single ICC Trophy is Ravindra Jadeja in 2013. Ishant Sharma is the only other Indian to take ten wickets in an ICC Trophy tournament, also achieving that feat 12 years ago.

India next play on March 1 when taking on New Zealand in their final group game. With the knockout stages yet to come, yet more records could be set by Indians in this ICC Trophy tournament.
