The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally expressed the country’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This step marks India’s official bid to bring the world’s most prestigious sporting event to its shores, a move that has the potential to transform the landscape of sports in the nation.

India’s Official Bid to Host The 2036 Olympic Games

India has officially taken a massive step toward hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games by submitting a ‘Letter of Intent’ to the International Olympics Committee’s (IOC) Future Host Commission. This follows months of informal discussions with the IOC and signals the country’s genuine intent and strategic vision for bringing the world’s grandest sports spectacle to its shores in the not-too-distant future.

Hosting the Olympics would provide an unparalleled opportunity to enhance the country’s infrastructure and sporting facilities, which will serve as a powerful source of inspiration for a new generation of athletes, elevating India’s presence on the global sports map. This bid is poised to generate both domestic excitement and international interest, further solidifying the country’s place as a key player in the global sporting arena.

During his address at the opening ceremony of the 38th National Games at the Rajiv Ghandi Cricket Stadium last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned that hosting the Olympics will not only improve sports facilities across the country but will also fuel other crucial sectors in the economy, including construction, transport and tournament, as hosting the National Games in Uttarakhand did so successfully.

"We are making every effort to secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics, which will take Indian sports to new heights. The Olympics bring widespread benefits to every sector and significantly enhance facilities for athletes.”

Sebastian Coe, a leading contender for the post of presidency of the IOC, has also expressed that India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games presents a “strong acse,” acknowledging the country’s potential to host such a prestigious event. However, Coe did point out that the competition will be fierce as several other nations are vying for the same opportunity. Alongside India, countries like South Africa, Qatar, Turkey, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia are also in the running, each hoping to secure the honor of hosting the Games.

The final decision on the 2036 host nation is not expected to be made until 2026, making the race to win the bid all the more intense.
