ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Stats You Need To Know Before Betting!

India, Australia Early Favourites for Champions Trophy Title
For the first time since 1996, Pakistan will host a global ICC event, with Dubai serving as the neutral venue for matches involving India. The tournament gets underway on February 19 and will be hosted across four cities: Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Dubai. The eight participating nations have been split into two groups. Group A consists of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and New Zealand, while Group B features Afghanistan, Australia, England and South Africa.
According to the pre-tournament betting odds, India is the clear favourite to lift the trophy, owing largely to their strong recent performances in ICC events, particularly their success in the 2023 World Cup. Looking at the history of the Champions Trophy, the Men in Blue stands out as the most successful team, with 18 wins in 28 matches. In addition, three of their matches have ended in a no-result giving them an impressive win rate of 72% (excluding games that ended in an N/R).
The Blue Shirts also had the ideal preparation leading up to the tournament, securing a 4-1 T20I series win over England last month before thrashing the Three Lions 3-0 in the 50-over format over the last couple of weeks. Furthermore, Rohit Sharma’s side have once again found themselves benefitting from a somewhat controversial ICC ruling. Due to their refusal to travel to Pakistan, all of their matches will be played at a single venue in Dubai, giving them the advantage of preparing a team and strategies for one pitch, while other teams will need to adjust to varying conditions in different locations.
Australia are always likely to be among the front-runners in any ICC event’s betting boards, but they have drifted slightly in the immediate days leading up to the competition, having lost their entire first-choice pace attack. Skipper Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh are all injured, Mitchell Starc has pulled out of the team due to personal reasons, and Marcus Stoinis opted to retire from ODI cricket after the preliminary squad was named. Indeed, with the likes of Steve Smith, Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell, the Aussies still have plenty of firepower with the bat, but there is no denying their bowling lineup looks questionable.
With so many key players missing, the Baggy Greens’ preparation for the competition was far from impressive, as they lost four of their last five ODIs, two each against Pakistan last year and Sri Lanka this month. In their last match, Australia were bowled out by the Lions for just 107 runs in 24.2 overs chasing 281, marking their lowest ODI total in 12 years. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the world champions have one of the lowest win percentages among teams that have played 20+ games in the Champions Trophy (including games that ended in no results).

ICC Champions Trophy: Key Stats From The Previous Edition (2017)
While many of the players who featured in the 2017 edition of the Champions Trophy will not be playing in this year’s competition, the key stats from the tournament are still an excellent guide to help with your betting decisions. Let’s take a look a the most noteworthy numbers from the previous edition:
- The highest total in the competition was 338/4 (Pakistan)
- Only seven of the 30 games ended with totals in excess of 300 runs
- The largest margin of victory was 180 runs (Pakistan beat India)
- The highest individual score was 133* (Joe Root)
- The highest partnership was 224 (Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah)
- Only 10 centuries were scored in the competition
- A total of 52 scores of 50+ were recorded
- The most sixes struck by a single player was 10 (Hardik Pandya)
- The most fours struck by a single player was 44 (Shikhar Dhawan)
- The top run-scorer in the competition scored 338 runs
- Only two batsmen scored more than 300 runs in total (both from India)
- The best batting strike rate was 194.44
- The best bowling figures in a match was 6/52 (Josh Hazlewood)
- The top wicket-taker in the competition took 13 wickets (Hasan Ali)
- Two of the top three bowlers in the competition came from Pakistan
- The best bowling economy rate was 4.29
- The most catches in the tournament were 4
- The most extras in an innings was 25
Based on the stats from the last tournament, there are several important takeaways. Notably, the previous edition of the Champions Trophy featured 30 games, and of those, only seven saw teams score more than 300 runs (23%).
Next, given the class of players who featured in the competition, delivering standout performances was fairly difficult. This is illustrated by the fact that only 10 players managed to score centuries. However, 52 scores of 50+ were registered, suggesting that backing players to score half-centuries will be a significantly safer betting option.
When looking at the bowling stats, only one player ended the tournament with more than 10 wickets, while there was only one five-wicket haul recorded across the 30 games. It is also worth considering that with this year’s tournament being played predominately in the sub-continent, conditions are likely to be much more suited to spinners rather than pace as we saw in England in 2017.
