Jermaine Wattimena vs Luke Littler
Another Dutchman making a name for himself at the 2024 Grand Slam of Darts is Jermaine Wattimena, who saw off world number seven Dimitri Van den Bergh in a thrilling 10-9 battle in the round of 16. While the victory over Van den Bergh was considered an upset, it wasn’t the first of the tournament for ‘Machine Gun’, who bested Mike de Decker (5-2), Michael Smith (5-1) and Mensur Suljovic (5-4) en route to the knockouts. Indeed, Wattimena got his fair share of luck with the Belgian missing eight match darts in the 19th leg, but with a clean slate heading into this next match, the 36-year-old could be a dark horse in the pack.
Jermaine Wattimena is the second-biggest outsider for the crown at 16.0 with William Hill and he is set to face the out-and-out favourite in Luke Little who is currently at 2.0 for the title.
Meanwhile, there is no telling the heights Luke Littler can reach! Still only 17 years of age, the ‘Nuke’ maintained his 100% record on his debut appearance at the Grand Slam of Darts by knocking out Mike De Decker, who was averaging an incredible 104.49 in the last 16. The teenager from Warrington rallied from 8-4 down, notching up six of the last seven legs to win the match 10-9 in a final-leg decider. Littler is the odds-on favourite for the title this year and will be featuring in his fifth TV major quarter-final in just his first full year on tour.
Our Jermaine Wattimena vs Luke Littler prediction: Luke Littler wins at 1.25!
Bet on Luke Littler to winMartin Lukeman vs Rob Cross
Marin Lukeman defeated all three of his group-stage opponents to book his place in the last 16 and is now set to make his second televised last-eight matchup after a convincing 10-5 victory over Ross Smith. The Watford thrower nicknamed ‘Smash’, shared the first six legs of the match with Smith but then took control with a three-leg run before a superb 121 out with a bull to keep his tournament hopes alive. Lukeman beat Cross in the group stage, giving him a psychological advantage in this match, and this could be Smash’s time to shine on the big stage.
Martin Lukeman is showing up at odds of 14.0 to secure the title but Rob Cross is third-favourite at 5.0.
After that setback against Lukeman in the group, Rob Cross has been in excellent rhythm and made safe progress to the quarter-final of the Grand Slam of Darts by beating Ritchie Edhouse 10-4 in the last 16. Cross, last year’s beaten finalist, is the highest seed left in the competition and was lethal with his checkouts against Edhouse, racking up a 164, 160 and 110, while hitting an incredible 10 of his 12 double attempts. ‘Voltage’ seems to be coming good at just the right time and had the third-highest average of the remaining competitors in the competition in the previous round.
Our Martin Lukeman vs Rob Cross prediction: Rob Cross wins at 1.5!
Bet on Rob Cross to winGary Anderson vs Gian van Veen
The second Scotsman to reach the last eight at the 2024 Grand Slam of Darts is none other than Gary Anderson, who overcame Stephen Bunting 10-6 on Thursday night in a proper scrap for victory. It was far from the most convincing performance we’ve seen from Anderson, but after a slow start, he opened up a commanding six-leg lead and never looked back, checking out 103 to book his spot in the next round. ‘The Flying Scotsman’ had also beaten the formidable Michael van Gerwen (5-4), as well as Ryan Joyce (5-1) and Noa-Lynn van Leuven (5-4) during the group stage of the tournament.
Gary Anderson is the bookmakers’ second-favourite for the title at 4.50 but Gian van Veen’s performances see him showing up at 8.0, fourth in the betting market.
Standing in Anderson’s way of the title, though, is the young Dutchman Gian van Veen, who has already etched his name in the history books in this tournament. The 22-year-old claimed group-stage victories over Josh Rock (5-2), Stephen Bunting (5-1) and Wessel Nijman (5-4), and in doing so, posted averages of 110.39, 114.71 and 103.99 respectively. That translated to a combined average of 108.89, which broke the long-standing group-stage record of the legendary Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, who delivered an average of 107.12 in 2014. 'GVV The Giant' followed that up with a 106.45 against Ryan Joyce in the round of 16, blowing away the Englishman in a lopsided 10-2 victory, which sees him inserted as the current fourth-favourite for the Grand Slam of Darts crown.
Our Gary Anderson vs Gian van Veen prediction: Gian van Veen wins at 2.3!
Bet on Gian van Veen to winCameron Menzies vs Mickey Mansell
Scotland’s Cameron Menzies caused one of the upsets of the 2024 Grand Slam of Darts this week by reaching the quarter-final of the competition with a dramatic final-leg win over the massively fancied James Wade. It was undoubtedly the finest hour in the career of Menzies, who is a plumber by day, as he blocked out the boisterous Wolverhampton crowd, who were firmly in the corner of his opponent. The 35-year-old had a brief wobble when he missed two darts for the win, but Wade fluffed his lines and Menzies subsequently nailed tops with his third attempt before falling to the ground with emotion. The Milton Keynes native is a David among the Goliaths in this competition, but cannot be overlooked.
Menzies is currently at 12.0 to win the Grand Slam of Darts, while Mansell is priced at 20.0.
Facing Menzies in the last eight is Northern Ireland’s Mickey Mansell, who will be making his first televised ranking quarter-final here at the age of 51. The elegant left-hander took down world number 12 Danny Noppert 10-7 after recovering from two sets down and ended with an average of 99.05, landing 10 of 15 double checkouts. It is turning into a historic tournament for Mansell, who is the lowest-ranked player remaining in the Grand Slam of Darts and the biggest outsider at the books, though that may work to his advantage, as the pressure will be firmly on whoever he comes up against.
Our Cameron Menzies vs Mickey Mansell prediction: Mickey Mansell wins at 2.86!
