Essential Euro 2024 and Copa America 2024 team comparison tool

Recently customised to include Euro 2024 and the Copa America 2024, our team comparator tool now allows for detailed analysis on all of the teams involved in the previously mentioned events. This is done by taking a side-by-side comparison between two teams on a number of important metrics which could be influential in determining a winner in a hypothetical matchup.
SportyTrader’s team comparison tool allows you to compare eight different criteria between two teams. Below you’ll find exactly what those categories are:

Next, we’ll go through a brief explanation of what each entails so you can better understand how to use the team comparator tool when making your predictions.
Squad strength
This is measured by taking the combined market value of the squad. The data is found on transfermarkt.com, one of the web’s most reliable sources in this respect.
Official FIFA ranking
A fairly straightforward one here, the teams are ranked according to their official FIFA ranking at the time. This data is pulled directly from the FIFA official website.
Fan support
Fan support refers to the total following that a national team has across the major social media platforms. The platforms in question for this metric are X (Twitter), Instagram and Facebook, with the total followers added up to come to the final fan support number.
Historical performance
This category refers to a nation’s performance in their specific competition over the years. Whether it be the European Championship or the Copa America, the results for where the team finished in each edition are graded with the final tally then being used to rank the teams. Here’s how it works out:
- Appearance: 1 point
- Round of 16: 2 points
- Quarter-finals: 3 points
- Semi-finals: 4 points
- Runners-up: 5 points
- Champions: 6 points
Current form (shape)
This metric takes the team in question’s last six (6) results, with the standard scoring system applied (i.e. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw). The points over those six games are added up to give a final ranking.
Attacking threat
Similar to the current form barometer, the attacking threat category takes a team’s goal scoring results over their last six results. These are then added up with the highest scoring team ranking first and the lowest scoring ranking last.
Defensive stability
The flipside of the attacking threat is the defensie stability metric. This works in the same way as the above, totaling up the number of goals that a team has conceded during its last six matches. The fewer the goals conceded, the higher on the rankings the team will appear.
Bookmakers’ odds
Last but not least, the bookmakers’ odds section takes the latest betting data into account to rank the competing teams. The odds for each team to win the tournament are ranked, with the lower odds ranking higher (i.e. the tournament favorites) and the higher odds ranked lower (i.e. the underdogs).
How the team comparator tool works for Euro 2024
Now that we understand how the comparisons are made, let's see it in action with an example from the 2024 European Championship, which kicks off on June 14th.
Let’s say we want to compare a potential finals clash between England and France, two of the heavyweights for the 17th edition of the Euros. All you have to do is navigate over to our Euro 2024 comparator page, select England and France from the two drop down bars and the data will instantly appear below! You can see a quick summary of the comparison data along with where each team ranks in the overall competition for that metric. Scrolling down the page further reveals the in-depth details for each criteria and is a great resource when formulating your sports bets.
From our example above, we can see that England edges out France in terms of squad strength (1st to 3rd), defence (8th vs 19th), and bookmakers’ odds (1st to 2nd). Meanwhile, France beats out England in terms of: FIFA ranking (1st to 2nd), fan support (1st to 2nd), competition history (3rd to 8th), current form (5th to 14th) and attack (1st to 9th). From this comparison, it would appear as though our tool is saying that France should have an edge over England in the Euros!
How the team comparator tool works for Copa America 2024
It’s not just the Euros that are kicking off this summer! The 48th edition of the Copa America begins on June 20th and is hosted by the United States. It’s a special event as teams from across North, Central and South America are invited to take part, not just teams exclusively from CONMEBOL as is usually the case. In total, 16 teams will fight it out for the shot to be crowned champions of the Americas!
Let’s see how the team comparison tool holds up for this tournament. In our example, we want to look at arguably one of football’s biggest rivalries and a rematch of the 2021 final: Argentina vs Brazil. First, we will head over to the Copa America 2024 comparator page. Then, as we did in the previous example, select Argentina vs Brazil in the drop down menus. The information is instantly loaded in, all that’s left is to compare!
From his example, Argentina leads in FIFA ranking, competition history, current form, attack, defence and bookmakers’ odds. Brazil, on the other hand, only leads in squad strength and fan support. The tool is therefore pointing towards a fairly comprehensive advantage for Lionel Messi and La Albiceleste in a matchup against their rivals.
