Last update of the ranking on 22/11/2024.

Who is the favourite for the World Cup in terms of transfer fees?

To establish our ranking of the favourites for the FIFA World Cup, several criteria were taken into account. The first, and not the least, concerns the value of the teams present in Qatar. In this respect, Gareth Southgate's England team is the one that stands out.

With an estimated total value of €1.26 billion ($1.31 billion) on the transfer market, the Three Lions' squad is the most expensive of this World Cup in Qatar. Will that produce results in the World Cup?

From Harry Kane and Phil Foden to Jude Bellingham, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish, England's squad is more expensive than Brazil's (€1.13 billion / $1.18 billion) and France's (€1.08 billion / $1.12 billion). Qatar, with a squad valued at €14 million ($14.57 million), come in last in this ranking.

Which team should be favoured according to the FIFA ranking?

The FIFA Ranking is an official classification that takes several factors into account. It is therefore natural that we have considered it when deciding our  ranking of the best teams for the 2022 World Cup.

Neymar's Brazil has been at the top of the rankings in recent months. They took over the top spot from  Kevin de Bruyne's Belgium and  in third place, Lionel Messi's Argentina. The Seleçao have been impressing the world for some time now, and this is reflected in their high ranking.

It's a performance index that Ghana, unfortunately, cannot boast of as they are the lowest ranked team in this year's World Cup. The Black Stars will be hoping to repeat the best ever performance by an African team in the World Cup. That was their quarter final place in 2010.

Which team is favoured by the fans for the World Cup?

Social media is so important in this day and age. We have therefore looked at the popularity of teams taking part in the 2022 World Cup. Unsurprisingly, it is Brazil that is still the favourite in this respect.

Neymar, Vinicius Junior, Casemiro, Thiago Silva... the popularity of some of the world's superstars makes Brazil the most followed team in the world (11.8 million fans on Facebook, 11.9 on Instagram, 5.4 on Twitter), and the one that can count on the affection of the largest number of followers.

It is worth mentioning that Mexico's team has the most  global followers on Twitter (6.5 million), while Portugal has more followers on Instagram (10.6 million) than it has inhabitants (10.3 million). Is it the Cristiano Ronaldo effect?

Which teams have the best advantage of World Cup experience?

Another criterion is how teams have fared in previous World Cup tournaments. As you may have noticed, the same teams are often found in the final rounds of a football World Cup.

France, Brazil, Argentina, Germany...it's simple, in 21 editions already played, only 8 teams have won the competition. It is therefore logical to find this criterion of experience in our hierarchy of favourites for the title of World Champions this year.

At the top of this ranking are Brazil and Germany. While the Brazilians have won the World Cup on five occasions (but not since 2002), it is the Germans (four times winners) who have played in more finals with a total of eight appearances in the title decider. That’s one more than Brazil have managed.

Both Brazil and Germany have played 109 games in the World Cup finals. They therefore have more experience than the other teams. It is Germany though who are our World Cup favourite in terms of tournament experience.

Who are the favourites for the 2022 World Cup in terms of form?

In this World Cup with its unique timing in the middle of the European season, the form of the teams will have a huge impact on the courses we can expect. So which teams are in the best shape ahead of the World Cup?

With 8 wins and 2 draws in their last ten matches, Argentina and Brazil are the big favourites for the World Cup if looking at current form.

Undefeated for many months, while playing opponents such as Italy, Uruguay and Brazil for the former, and opponents from around the globe (Argentina, Colombia, Japan, Ghana...), the two South American selections are the opponents to avoid in Qatar. And we're betting that these two will certainly go far in the competition.

Which favourite has the best attack at the World Cup?

On average, World Cup matches have seen 2.65 goals per game in the last two tournaments. This means that having an effective attack is often crucial in the quest for the title, and once again it is Brazil who are leading the way in this regard.

The Brazilians have scored 28 times in their last ten matches, ahead of the Germans (27 goals scored) and the English (24 goals scored - though 10 were scored in one game against San Marino). This is enough to frighten the defences of Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon, who are in Group G with the Seleçao.

As for those struggling to find the back of the net, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador and Cameroon are the only teams not to have scored at least 10 goals in their last ten matches. These three teams will not be among the favourites for the honorary title of best attack at the 2022 World Cup.

Who is the World Cup favourite with the best defence?

Having a good attack is essential to win a World Cup, but so is having a good defence. Obviously, the defensive strengths of the teams have been taken into account in our ranking of the favourites to win the World Cup.

Here, it is Lionel Scaloni's Argentina that has the upper hand over all other participants in the 2022 World Cup. Although known for their offensive talents (Messi, Dybala, Lautaro Martinez, Alvarez, Di Maria...), the Albiceleste has conceded only 2 goals in their last ten games, making them the most reliable defence for this World Cup.

The Top 3 of this defensive ranking remains 100% South American, with a second place for Brazil (3 goals conceded) and a third place for Uruguay (5 goals conceded).

In terms of defences in trouble, Poland are bottom of the table, having conceded 16 goals in their last ten games.

South Korea and Wales are close behind, conceding 14 goals in the same number of games. These teams will no doubt find it difficult to remain solid against the big favourites of this World Cup.

Who is the bookmakers' favourite for the 2022 World Cup?

In terms of bookmakers, Brazil has the lowest odds on the market for the World Cup title.

With an average of 5.00, the Brazilians' sixth title is the most likely scenario this winter, ahead of France. Argentina and England.

One more criterion in favour of Brazil, which leads us to a clear conclusion: the Brazilians are the big favourites for the 2022 World Cup.

Brazil, the big favourite for the World Cup

Five times No. 1 and three times No. 2 in eight evaluation criteria, Brazil is the big favourite for this 2022 World Cup according to our ranking.

With an in-form attack, an impervious defence, experience at the highest level and the support of the public, the most successful team in history is the one that is expected to be the most successful at this edition in Qatar.

Even if other nations such as England (see below), Germany or Argentina are obviously to be followed in the tournament, the Brazilians are the ultimate favourites, both among bookmakers and among football fans.

In fact, our World Cup predictions have been going in this direction for many months, confirming this feeling as well. It's a good thing that this Qatari World Cup could be the right one for Brazil, which has been chasing the trophy for twenty years now.

England: Are they really one of the favourites?

England are high in our rankings but can they finally win the World Cup for the second time? They reached the semi-finals in 2018 and went on to be losing finalists in the 2020 European Championships (held last year due to the pandemic).

In terms of scoring goals, they are third in our rankings for that category. However, their 24 goals in their last 10 games is a misleadingly good one. 15 goals came in two games against Albania (5) and San Marino (10). They have only four goals in their last six internationals, three coming in their most recent match against Germany.

England were relegated from the top tier of the Nations League this year. They do have a strong squad with a good mix of experience and younger players. The English team play the USA, Iran and Wales in their group, not the easiest one they could have had.

Gareth Southgate’s squad needs to improve on recent performances if they are to do well in Qatar. If they were to hit peak form though, England could go deep but look unlikely to become the world champions. You can also check this out by using our 2022 World Cup Team Comparator Tool right now.
