Third seed Cori Gauff has made the Indian Wells quarterfinals once again and will battle the in-form Yuan Yue. The winner will then set up a showdown with either Maria Sakkari or Emma Navarro for a place in the final. Yuan Yue has been in exceptional form this season and in recent weeks has taken her game up a notch. The Chinese player has compiled a 16-5 record and is currently on an eight-match winning run. Currently making her main draw debut in this event, Yue arrived in Coachella having triumphed in Austin for her first career tour title. She defeated former Indian Wells finalist Daria Kasatkina in three sets in the last round. All 21 matches that Yue has contested this season have been on hard courts. She is currently up to 37th in the live ranking which is a new career high and is up to 19th in the live race.

Cori Gauff has equaled her best-ever result in this tournament by advancing to the last eight. The American made the quarterfinals last season after two successive years of exiting in the third round. After battling through three sets in her opener against Clara Burel, Gauff has won her last two rounds in straight sets. She was in exceptional form in her last match and defeated Elise Mertens by the loss of just two games. Gauff has also had a strong first quarter of the season and has won 15 of 18 matches. All matches have taken place on hard courts. The world number three triumphed in Auckland at the start of the season and made the semifinals in Melbourne. She was eliminated in Dubai, right before arriving at Indian Wells, in the quarterfinals. A disappointing result as she was one of the favourites to go all the way. Gauff is placed at number six in the live race.
