Yuan Yue and fellow unseeded player Caroline Dolehide will battle in the third round at the Indian Wells Open. The winner will then play either Sloane Stephens or Daria Kasatkina next. Yuan Yue has been in excellent form this season and so far has compiled a 14-5 record. All 19 matches have been played on hard courts. The Chinese number three has won her last seven matches and this has allowed her to move into a new career world ranking. She is currently ranked 45th in the live ranking after making a four-place leap. Yue, who has won both her rounds here without dropping a set, triumphed in Austin right before arriving in Coachella. This was her first title of the season and the first tour title of her career. Yue defeated compatriot Qinwen Zheng by the loss of seven games in the second round. The 25-year-old is making her Indian Wells main draw debut.

Caroline Dolehide is having a strong return to the main draw of this WTA 1000 event and will hope to prolong her tournament. The American has equaled her best-ever result by advancing to this round. She made the third round in her debut back in 2018 which was also the last time she played in the main draw. Dolehide won her first-round tie dominantly as she dropped just two games against Cristina Bucsa. Her second-round tie wasn’t as straightforward. The match lasted close to three hours as two-time Indian Wells champion Victoria Azarenka battled from a set down to force a decider. Dolehide will hope her performance in this tournament is the turning point in her season. The 25-year-old has had a poor start to the year and has lost seven times in 11 outings. She is currently up one place to 50th in the live ranking.
