Second seed Aryna Sabalenka begins her Canadian Open campaign with a second-round showdown against the unseeded Yuan Yue. This will be their first career meeting and the winner will square off with Beatriz Haddad Maia or Katie Boulter next.

Yuan Yue has struggled with her form in recent weeks and arrived in Toronto having lost six times in nine matches. She, however, did have a strong start to her debut in the Rogers Cup. The Chinese number three defeated Cristina Bucsa in straight sets in the first round.

She has now claimed 18 of her 23 victories this year on hard courts and is up two places to 40th in the live ranking.

Aryna Sabalenka has never lost her opening fixture at the Canadian Open and comes here as a strong favorite. The world number three will be confident of maintaining this for a sixth consecutive time.

Sabalenka has had a strong season and so far has won 32 of the 42 matches she has played. In recent outings, however, she has seen a dip in form. The former Rogers Cup semi-finalist has lost three times in her last six matches.

After a disappointing quarter-final exit at the French Open, Sablenka was defeated early in Berlin and then in the semis in Washington. This year’s Australian Open champion has made it to the final in four tournaments. She has only claimed one title, defending the crown she won in Melbourne last year.
