Varvara Gracheva looks to continue her good recent form. The ATX Open finalist takes on fellow qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure in the Indian Wells first round. Whoever wins this match will be up against 25th seeded Petra Martic in round two. Gracheva began this week ranked 66th which was a rise of 22 places after her exploits in Austin last week. That saw her beat two seeds before losing to Marta Kostyuk in the ATX Open final. There was little time to rest after that defeat with two qualifiers needing to be won to reach the Indian Wells main draw. Those hurdles were dealt with, though it took her three sets to get past Anna-Liena Friedman with two tie-breaks being played. Ysaline Bonaventure started this tournament in a career high 84th place and also had to qualify to reach the Indian Wells main draw. The Belgian won both of her qualifiers in straight sets but required a couple of tie-breaks. Betting on another taking place in this match looks a good bet. Bonaventure is up to 80th in the live rankings so another career high for the 28-year-old. 2023 began well for her with a run to the last four in the Auckland Classic but lost in the first round of the Australian Open to Ekaterina Alexandrova, winning only three games. Her best performance since then was getting to the last eight in Monterrey, though no players ranked above 97 were beaten.  Bonaventure has played Gracheva twice before and won both matches. Gracheva has improved since those losses. The worry with Gracheva is everything might catch up with her after that long week in Austin.
