Sixth seed Holger Rune and wildcard Yoshihito Nishioka are set to battle again in 2024. The two will square off in the second round in Tokyo on Saturday. Below are some stats for both players leading up to this match followed by our prediction.

Nishioka is coming off one of the longest matches in the ATP this season. The Japanese number one needed three hours and eight minutes to get the better of Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round.

Nishioka had lost twice already this year against the Canadian and needed to dig deep to avoid a hat trick of losses. He won the first and third sets via a tiebreaker.

The world number 59, who claimed the title in Atlanta, has now improved his record to 28-22. Nishioka won the first matchup with Rune last year in Adelaide.

Holger Rune also needed three sets to win his opening-round tie against Alejandro Tabilo. The win saw him halt a run of three successive matches without a win. Rune is having a strong year but is yet to win a title.

Having a title in each of the last two years, time is slowly running out for him to keep this trend going. The world number 14 finished as runner-up in Brisbane and has also made it to the semi-finals in four other events.

Rune, who has compiled a 34-19 record, earned one of his 17 hard-court victories against Nishioka. This was a four-set success at the Australian Open that allowed him to tie this series at 1-1.

The winner here will play Jordan Thompson or Kei Nishikori next.
