Yoshihito Nishioka has started the season with shaky form and comes into the year’s first major on a two-match skid.

The 29-year-old won his first three games and made the second round in Brisbane as a qualifier. He, however, was defeated in his follow-up event in Adelaide in the first round.

The Japanese number one has dropped two places to 65th in the live ranking. Nishioka has been defeated in the first round in Melbourne three times in his last four appearances.

Mohamed Dougaz is making his Grand Slam debut. The Tunisian battled through the qualifying rounds and won his three fixtures via a decider.

In two of his matchups, he was forced to come from a set down to secure victory.

Currently placed 231st in the live ranking, Dougaz has won 13 ITF titles with 11 being on hardcourts. The 27-year-old has won 213 hardcourt fixtures in his career.

Last season, Dougaz won 49 matches and debuted in the main draw at a tour event in Marrakech.
