Third seed Nicolas Jarry faces unseeded Yannick Hanfmann in round one of the Rio Open. The winner of this match will take on Argentinian opposition in the next round of this outdoor clay court tournament. That'll be either unseeded Federico Coria or qualifier Mariano Novane. Jarry will hope to continue the good form he showed in Buenos Aires. The Chilean lost in the final and beat Carlos Alcaraz in the last four. That run to the final of that clay court event saw him move up to 19th in the rankings, just one place below his career high. Jarry won clay court tournaments in Chile and Switzerland last year and reached the fourth round at Roland Garros. He leads Hanfmann 2-1 in previous meetings but did lose their most recent match in Rome last year.

Yannick Hanfmann is ranked 56th but was as high as 45th last July. The German has only won three of his eight matches played in 2024. That's left him 124th in the Live ATP Race which is 91 places below that of his opponent. Hanfmann lost three of his four matches played down under on hard courts. He has shown some improvement back on his preferred clay court surface. He reached the last eight in Cordoba but was then beaten in round one in Buenos Aires last week. Jarry is in by far the better form and he can win this match.
