Sixth seed Jannik Sinner has to get past unseeded Yannick Hanfmann to reach the US Open second round. The scheduled second round opponent for the winner is either Lorenzo Sonego or qualifier Nicolas Moreno de Alboran. Sinner reached the quarter finals of this outdoor hard court Grand Slam last year. It was nearly the last four but he let slip a two sets to one lead over eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Italian is a career high sixth in the world and recently won the hard court tournament held in Toronto. His most recent event saw him lose in the first round but after a busy schedule, he's had a good rest since then. Sinner has reached at least the last eight in four of his last five tournaments. He's won two titles this year and only Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev have earned more ranking points than him this year. 2022 saw him win four hard court titles, so he's definitely a player to be reckoned with this week.

Jannik Hanfmann is ranked 54th but he has a terrible record in Grand Slam events. He first played in one six years ago but is yet to play in a third round. The German has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam on eight previous occasions including two this year. He's yet to get past the first round in New York and has failed to qualify three times including last year. Current form has seen him lose his last four matches, two of them on hard courts. He's lost six of his 11 hard court matches this year and defeat number seven is on the way. We go for Sinner to win this in straight sets.
