Britain's Harriet Dart continues her bid to reach the US Open main draw. A tough task lies ahead of her as the Brit faces Yanina Wickmayer in the second qualifying round. Whoever wins this will face either Viktoria Golubic or Sachia Vickery for a place in the first round proper. Wickmayer is the third seed in the qualifying rounds and strongly fancied to win this match. Currently ranked 86th, the 33-year-old was as high as 12th in the past but that was 13 years ago. The Belgian was a semi-finalist in the US Open back in 2009 and made it to the fourth round the following year. Since then she's never got past round two in this Grand Slam and between late 2020 and 2022 took time off the tour. 2023 has seen her enjoying success on the ITF circuit but her most recent WTA tournament didn't go well. In Prague, Wickmayer retired in the second set of her last 16 match against Tamara Korpatsch after losing the first four games of set one. Back fit again, the Belgian had to come from behind to beat Katherine Sebov.

Harriet Dart was ranked 140th at the start of this tournament. In the live rankings the 27-year-old is down four places because she's defending the points earned when reaching the US Open second round last year. Dart was as high as 84th in July 2022 but hasn't enjoyed the best of form this year. Her last tournament saw the Brit beaten in her first match by then world 249 Eudice Chong when retiring in the final set. That was her fourth loss in a row. The last two were on the ITF circuit in hard court events with one loss being to a player ranked outside the top 300. One ITF hard court title has been won this year but no players in the top 250 were beaten. The first qualifying round of the 2023 US Open saw her come from a set down to beat Chloe Paquet.
