Second seed Zhu Lin continues with her Hua Hin title defence and will battle the unseeded Wang Yafan in the semifinals. The winner will then square off with either Xinyu Wang or Diana Shnaider for the title. Wang Yafan is through to her first tour semifinal in five years. She last was at this stage of a tour championship in 2019 during her title triumph in Acapulco. The 29-year-old will be hoping for a similar outcome against an opponent she knows all too well. Yafan and Lin have battled each other seven times before with the former winning four times. The Chinese number six, defeated Katie Volynets in three sets in the last round. She had to come from a set down to win with the third set requiring a tiebreaker. Yafan’s run in Hua Hin has bumped her up 10 places in the live ranking to number 68.

Zhu Lin is the defending Thailand Open champion. And she has been dominant in the defence of her title. The Chinese number three has won all her three matches here without dropping a set. In the last round, she lost six games to unseeded Arina Rodionova. Despite her dominance here, Lin has dropped 14 places in the live ranking to 59th place. Lin has had more success in the latter stages of tour tournaments than Yafan. Last season, she contested six tour semifinals and advanced to a final twice. All three of Lin’s victories over Yafan have come on hard courts with the last two either being a semifinal or final victory.
