Wang Yafan hopes to maintain her impressive US Open campaign when she faces Katie Boulter in the second round on Thursday. In the first round, qualifier Yafan shocked seventh seed Caroline Garcia in straight sets. The second top-10 win of her career came in 70 minutes and saw her lose just five games. The win was the perfect way to mark her main draw return here in four years. Yafan last played here in 2019. She will now hope to advance from this round for the first time. The Chinese number four is back in the WTA top 100 after dropping down to 696th last season. She is currently ranked 94th in the live ranking. The 29-year-old has dominated this year though the majority of her matches have been outside the tour. She has compiled a 57-10 record with a massive 33 of her victories coming on hard court. Yafan is on an 11-match winning streak. Before arriving at Flushing Meadows, she won the Golden Gate challenger. This was her sixth title of the year.

Unseeded Boulter was also in fine form in her opener against Diane Parry. She dropped just four games in the straight sets win. The win ended a two-match losing run and moved the Briton up to 55th, a career-high, in the live ranking. Boulter is having a decent campaign and has compiled a 34-16 record. The majority of her victories, 18, have come on hard court and so too have most of her defeats. Boulter is making only her second hand draw appearance at the year's final major. The win over Parry was her first-ever win at Flushing Meadows which should build her confidence going into this match. The 27-year-old's form in 2023 has allowed her to record another first as she won her first career tour title in Nottingham. Boulter has won two titles this season with the other coming on hard court in the ITF circuit.
