Unseeded Julia Grabher and the qualifier Wang Xiyu will on Monday square off at the Tennis in the Land tournament. The winner of this first-round tie will play unseeded Zhu Lin in the second round. Wang Xiyu dropped one set in her two matches in qualifying. This was in her last match against the third seed in qualifying Martina Trevisan. The Chinese number five is now up nine places to number 84 in the live ranking after winning her 17th match of the year. This was however not enough to change her losing record. Xiyu has lost 18 matches thus far and the majority, 10, have come on hard court. On the surface, she has also lost more than she has won in 17 outings. Despite her struggles, Xiyu has managed one challenger title which was in Landisville on hard court earlier in the month.

Julia Grabher has also struggled with a lack of consistency all through 2023. She has compiled a 22-25 record thus far and has found the going tough on every single surface except clay. The Austrian has lost eight times in 12 outings on hard court. But as she is coming off a title win, she will be confident of turning things around here. Grabher is switching to hard court after winning on clay the Maspalomas Gran Canaria in the ITF circuit. This is her first title of the season and allowed her to start the week ranked 54th in the WTA world ranking. Grabher is making her debut in Cleveland.
