World number 36 Xinyu Wang starts her Olympic Games campaign with a first-round match against world number 92, Tamara Korpatsch. As these two debutants face off, here’s our preview for the match and a prediction.

Despite being a bit inconsistent, Wang has had a strong year. She has 22 wins and recorded one tour semi-final as well as a fourth-round finish at Wimbledon. The Chinese world number two defeated Jessica Pegula at the All England Club to register her first WTA top 10 victory.

Possessing the head-to-head advantage in this fixture, she should be confident of making a winning start at the Olympics. Wang defeated Korpatsch both times they squared off though none of their meetings were at tour level.

Like Wang, Korpatsch is also hoping for a flying start at Paris 2024. She has struggled this year and only managed six wins in 25 outings. There’s no surface she has dominated, including clay where she has registered most of her over 240 career wins.

Korpatsch has managed just three wins since May and is currently on a three-match skid. Though she has struggled, the 29-year-old will fancy her chances of a win here. This is because she is a far better performer on clay than Wang. Also, the two have never battled on clay before.

The winner of this third career meeting between the two will play either Sara Sorribes Tormo or Barbora Krejcikova next.
