Western Province vs Griffons Prediction & Betting Tips - Currie Cup
by Devesh Jaganath in Currie Cup Predictions
The fifth round of matches in the Currie Cup Premier Division is set to get underway this weekend, and in our featured match, we will see the Griffons make the trip from the Northern Free State to the Cape Town Stadium to take on Western Province on Saturday evening. The 2022 First Division champions, the Griffons, have been unable to kick on from their form last season and lost their first three matches in this tournament. The first came against the Sharks in Durban 32-16, followed by a 52-12 thrashing against the Cheetahs, and finally, a 41-26 defeat to the Lions at the end of March. However, the Griffons showed their resilience against a heavily fancied Blue Bulls side in their last match, pulling off a win in the dying moments to snatch a thrilling 32-28 victory on their home patch. The visitors are in seventh place in the standings, with five points courtesy of the bonus point they picked up in the last match, which they will hope serves as a platform for them to build on over the upcoming weeks.
Western Province will feel they owe their home crowd a good performance here after their poor display last time out against the Griquas. Western Province got their tournament off to a flyer with solid wins over the Lions 28-44 and the Blue Bulls 33-41, grabbing two bonus points along the way. However, their run was cut short when they visited the Shark Tank in Durban, where they slumped to a 20-7 defeat. Their first home match of the tournament came last weekend against the Griquas, but it ended badly for the hosts, losing 13-32. After taking a commanding lead, Western Province went into the half-time break 13-0 in the lead but was unable to follow up in the second half. The Griquas, spurred on by George Whitehead, barreled over the home side, scoring 32 unanswered points to take the win 13-32 by the final whistle. The hosts would have had an entire week to work out what went wrong in that match and will need to win this one to stay in contention with the sides above them and not let the gap to the top extend too far.

Our Western Province vs Griffons Prediction
Western Province will want to put their terrible second-half performance in their last match behind them in this one as they step under the floodlights in front of their home crowd. The Griffons showed their fighting spirit in their last match but have struggled on the road so far in this tournament, and coming up against a fired-up Western Province at a lower altitude could prove to be a difficult task. Our Western Province v Griffons prediction is a win for the hosts.
