Beginners - How does EuroVolley 2023 (ECV) work?

“Euro

EuroVolley 2023 is the European Volleyball Nations Championship. Held every two years, it awards the title of European Volleyball Champion, second only to the world title. In terms of format, the competition is divided into two phases: the group phase and then the knockout rounds.

In 2023, the group phase runs from August 28 to September 6. During this first part, the 24 qualified teams are divided into 4 groups of 6 teams, the top four of which qualify for the knockout phase. A win earns 3 points, a tie-break win (3-2) earns 2 points, a tie-break loss (2-3) earns one point, and a loss earns no points.

The second phase, played between September 8 and 16, 2023, then begins with the Round of 16, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and grand final on September 16 in Rome. A match for third place (and the bronze medal) is also organized between the two losers of the semi-finals.

After the group stage, the Round of 16 takes place with the following matches:

  • Group B winner - Group D fourth
  • Group D runner-up - Group B third
