Third seed Maria Sakkari begins her Charleston Open campaign with a second-round showdown against unseeded Viktoriya Tomova. The winner here will then play either Lesia Tsurenko, Arina Rodionova, or Astra Sharma next. Viktoriya Tomova battled through three sets to win her first-round tie against Mayar Sherif. It was her first outing on clay this season and she will be hoping switching to the surface sparks a season turnaround. Tomova is a strong performer on clay and has won over 140 matches on the surface in her career. One of those wins came against Sakkari in the final of the ITF Szeged Open in 2016. Tomova has compiled a 10-10 record and was a quarterfinalist in Hobart. This was the only time she had moved past the second round at an event this season. The 29-year-old has moved up two places to 72nd in the live ranking.

Maria Sakkari has been in superb form in recent weeks and will arrive here fully confident of making a winning start. The Greek number one has registered seven of her 12 wins thus far in her last nine outings. Sakkari had a turbulent start to the year but all this changed when she arrived at Indian Wells. At the WTA 1000 event, the 28-year-old finished as runner-up and rode that momentum to the quarterfinals in Miami. Sakkari is a dominant clay court performer and has won over 160 matches on the surface as well as a tour title. The two-time tour champion’s recent rich vein of form has seen her move up to sixth in the live ranking. Sakkari has won the last two meetings with Tomova which both took place two seasons ago.
