Thirteenth seed Veronika Kudermetova and wildcard Dayana Yastremska will meet at the Dubai Tennis Championship. The two will square off in the first round with the winner playing either Sofia Kenin or Sorana Cirstea next. Veronika Kudermetova defeated Yastremska in this round back in 2020. It was the last time they met and was her third win over the Ukrainian. Kudermetova has never lost in this fixture and will hope to maintain this as she seeks to end her current struggles. The Ukrainian, who finished as runner-up here in 2022, is having a disappointing start to the year. She has lost five times in seven outings and is on a four-match losing run. This dip in form has seen her tumble down the WTA standings. She is on the verge of dropping out of the top 20 and is ranked 19 in the live ranking.

Dayana Yastremska has had an exciting start to the season. The 23-year-old has won 11 of the 14 matches she has played with 10 of those coming on hard courts. Eight of those wins came in her excellent run to the Australian Open semifinals as a qualifier. It was her best-ever result at a major and became the lowest-ranked player to reach the last four in Melbourne in 40 years. She however did not produce another deep run in her next tournament and was eliminated in the second round in Linz. As she returns to hard court, she will be confident of getting going once again. Yastremska’s Melbourne run catapulted her up the WTA rankings and is currently placed at number 29 in the live ranking. Her best result in Dubai came two seasons ago as she made the quarterfinals.
