The last 16 of the hard court Brisbane International sees sixth seed Veronika Kudermetova take on the 11th seeded Anastasia Potapova. For the winner there's a quarter final against either second seeded Elena Rybakina or the 13th seed Elise Mertens to look forward to. Kudermetova began this tournament ranked 16th in the world but was in ninth position this time last year. 2023 saw her struggle in the Grand Slam events with only two matches being won. Kudermetova did win one singles title last year, being the victor in the Pan Pacific Open in October where Jessica Pegula was beaten in the final. Iga Swiatek was also defeated on her way to the final. That was on a hard court which is the surface this Brisbane International is being played. Her other final reached last year was on grass in the Netherlands. So far in this tournament, the 26-year-old has beaten unseeded Anna Schmiedlova for the loss of five games.

Anastasia Potapova had a much tougher match last time out and needed three sets to get past Daria Saville. The middle set was the one lost but Potapova recovered to win the deciding one 6-4. That win for the world number 28 has seen her rise one place in the live rankings. Potapova will need to improve her past form against Kudermetova if she wants to reach the last eight. Kudermetova has won three of their four previous matches including two in 2023 but both matches were played on clay. There's been one previous meeting in Australia with Kudermetova getting the win.
